Movie Studios Fight Over Carl Erik Rinsch’s The Gift

Carl Erik Rinsch isn’t necessarily a name you’re familiar with now, but that could easily change depending on what happens to his latest project, The Gift.

Developed as part of a short-film experiment from electronics manufacturer Phillips, Rinsch’s The Gift debuted online this week to instant viral acclaim, but that’s not all it achieved — it also attracted the attention of various movie studios, including Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox.

Heat Vision reports that studios are interested in expanding Rinsch’s The Gift into a full-length feature film. It’s not hard to see why, given the film’s apparent mixture of elements from The Bourne Identity, Children of Men and I, Robot, among other inspirations.

Early speculation pegs Fox as the frontrunner given the studio’s connections to director Ridley Scott, who is Rinsch’s mentor. Interestingly enough, Rinsch was briefly attached to Fox’s planned Alien prequel, though the studio ultimately chose Scott as the director.
