Lindelof: Lost Finale Won’t Answer All Your Questions

Lost‘s finale is only weeks away, but don’t expect an ending that’ll answer all of your lingering questions about the show, according to co-creator and executive producer Damon Lindelof. That said, it’s Lost. Did anyone really think they’d be able to answer everything?

Interviewed by the Hollywood Reporter, Lindelof explained that, while the series has an ending, it’s just not one that dots the is and crosses the ts, plotwise:

The series finale has to fit the show. We’re trying to end lost in a way that feels ‘Lost’-ian and fair and will generate a tremendous amount of theorizing. We’re going to be as definitive as we can be and say this is our ending, but there’s no way to end the show where the fans aren’t going to say, ‘What did they mean by this?’ Which is why we’re not going to explain it.

Ah, yes: The old “Well, you wouldn’t have liked it, so why bother?” ruse. That didn’t work in high school and I’m not sure it’ll work here either, Mr. Lindelof. Lost‘s finale will air Sunday, May 23rd.

That is the worst explanation I have ever heard. Me thinks the creators don’t even know what is going on. Classic sign that they made the show up as they went along and didn’t have a solid story written before hand. Shame…

I don’t think it’s an excuse. Lindelof is right; an episode full of “this meant this” and “that meant that” revelations would very hard to pull off and still be satisfying from a storytelling point of view. And if they did it that way, it’d feel out of character with the rest of the show’s episodes. That’s why the Seinfeld finale was so awful; they tried to put a moral on a show that had always been lesson-free.

Unfortunately, the Lost creators are kind of stuck. There’s going to be backlash over the finale no matter what.

If they are not going to explain all the clues they’ve present all these years what was the point? The explainations we’ve been given this year have been really wanting. What’s sad is they make it so much more difficult for other shows like this because the viewers aren’t going to invest their time if there’s not going to be a satisfying pay-off at the end.

Cop out. Lame cop out. Shame on you Lindelof, especially since you’ve been assuring us since season 1 that everything will be explained.
