Breaking: Smallville To End Next Season

Smallville will end next year after its 10th season, The Live Feed reports. The CW plans to make the announcement Thursday during its upfront presentation.

Star Tom Welling, who became a co-executive producer last season, has confirmed the cancellation, which doesn’t exactly come as a surprise. Many thought the ninth season would be the series’ last.

Debuting on Oct. 16, 2001, on what was then The WB, Smallville became an unlikely hit early on for the network, even as comic fans were skeptical of a series revolving around a young Superman that pledged “no tights, no flights.” The pilot broke the record for the highest-rated debut on The WB, with 8.4 million viewers. Smallville is one of just three shows at The CW remaining from The WB days (Supernatural and One Tree Hill are the other two).

Developed by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, Smallville has averaged 4.47 million viewers per episode over its nine seasons, and a star of Welling, who has gone on to direct several episodes of the series. The show also spawned an Aquaman spinoff that didn’t make it past the pilot. A much-discussed Green Arrow spinoff has never materialized.

Gough and Millar left the series in 2008 after the seventh season, leading many to believe Smallville quickly would be canceled. But the network, and the show, defied expectations, with Smallville actually climbing in the ratings after its ninth-season move to Fridays. The CW announced the 10th-season renewal in March.

    Kind of sad… :(

all things must end. and small vile time has come. though hopefully before the last episode the producers let three things happen clark get to be in the super man tights. wb lets produers finaly have clark meet wonder woman . as they have been trying to do since day one and maybe also let the producers finaly have a young bruce wayne cross paths with clark. since its near the end.

Just make the entire season 10 a show w/ Clark as Superman. THE WHOLE SEASON.

  • PeterWDawson

Should be interesting to see what they'll do now that they know its their last season. I'm doubting they'll be able to get Rosenbaum back due to his commitment to other projects, but even a cameo would be nice. Really at this point I'd just like to see if Welling really can pull off the tights or not.

  • Shomy092

Expected… It had to end sooner or later….. I'd prefer the secon option tough… I realy liked it… :((

  • christian

I'm okay with it, as long as season 10 has Clark in the Blue and Reds which isn't a hard jump after the end of S9

Though if Smallville ends with S10, can we get a Chloe spinoff (Just call her Oracle 2.0 and do a new Birds of Prey!) or better yet, a JSA series!

  • Tom Fitzpatrick

I sure hope that during the 10th season, we'll finally see Clark (or Kal-el) learn how to fly.

I'm not expecting super-flight right off the back, but at least, they could show learning curves as he gets better at it.

  • Noam

Thank Rao, I like the show, but its been on a little to long Welling must be pushing 40 by now. Even Clark is in his late twenties at this point he won't be Superman, he'll be Super Old Man by the time he finally comes out.

  • demoncat

would rather have the green arrow spin off. though a jsa show would be cool if they could include the spectre in it. as for chloe getting a spin off. they have never stated or applied she is suppose to be Oracle. though would love birds of prey to get another shot as a tv show.

  • Jeff

He turned 33 less than a month ago so no, he's not pushing 40.

Averages of 4.47 million over nine seasons, sure, but in the past three years it's only averaged 3.29m. I'm genuinely surprised they're giving this another year – the DVD and international sales must be strong.

  • mickeylodeon

that would be great!! clark meeting bruce wayne as kids.. in batman hush theres a scene where they met as kids..

  • mickeylodeon

clark should wear the tights!! not the matrix thingee..

  • demoncat

since day one the producers both current and former ones who created the show have been wanting a young clark and Bruce Wayne to meet the set up bruce is starting his journey to be batman but Warner's has kept saying no to batman .hope this time it happens long over due

God I just love smallville, after waiting for a long 8 years for smallville to come so awesome for season 9. I just love it so much. Now I am all depressed and sad and no more waiting for smallville on Friday. Please someone, someone out there tell me when the season 10 going to start. I just cannot wait anymore. Also anyone, who was the women in hospital outside tests room, maybe checkmate women or some other government operative or maybe LEX LUTHOR sidekick.

  • Radjack

How cool would it be to have a gotham city “smallville”?
Bruce Wayne on his first years before becoming batman!
I would love to see that.

  • demoncat

Actully the original idea for small vile was a young Bruce Wayne on his journey to be batman but the PtB said no and thus we got smallvile. plus there were plans for new series dealing with Dick grayson on his road to be robin did not take. for some reason Warner's does not like the idea of a tv version of Batman showing up again.

  • demoncat

the new season will not start till fall. so sorry you have to wait til then as for that woman in tess hospital room. that was check mates big boss Amanda Waller and she answers to no one and certainly not Lex. Amanda would eat him for her lunch .

  • http://twitter.com/Taskmasterpeace Task

They cant have him meet Bruce Wayne. Contracts.

  • demoncat

that and warnrs believing it would confuse batman fans by having a young bruce show up . for contracts can always be changed to have clark meet Bruce. but other wise its a dc fan dream that is never going to be .

  • thegiga

im sad t see smallville go but if its going to go clark needs to fly and av the blue and reds on… they should finish it with him catchin louis lane from the helicopter like the orig film and just like my other fav show stargate make a few follow on films (remakes of the orig with a smallville touch of brillents and lads this is smallville not batman then again a justice league movie would break all records and i dont mean a bloody cartoon a good 5/6 hr film split in t 3 films that should break the box office

  • valerie

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Oh my god I feel like crying! I love this show like no other.
It is my favorite and I really have goosebumps and am nearly in tears at the thought of not getiing more and more of Smallville!

  • Spartacus4011

Bruce Wayne is Batman & Clark Kent is Superman – two different heroes, should stay two different shows, with a possible guest appearence at the most. Cancelling Smallville after Season Ten is purely an instant fan-killer of the CW – this would be my revenge, and I'll put CHUCK in my number one spot, since nothing else on the CW bears me any interest – it seems when a show stars to get really good, they cancel it -another stupid move by the CW and Tom Welling, who will disappoint his fan base, and will slowly fade from the screen, because the viewing public will forever see him as Clark Kent only.

  • demoncat

Tom knew the risk of being typecast as clark. when he took the job. and as for the series ending all series end other wise they get stale and fans get to where that is still on? as for batman making a guest appearance. every time some producer asks for batman to do that they keep getting turned down .

  • Olliwollie

Did you not see the promo, Those bats were very obvious

  • Alanharter

How about this, Superman could be the spin off of Smallville, but the problem would be that Tom has a no tight no flight contract. I understand it is probably the end..but will he end his hold out?

  • barbara

i don't think that they should stop aring the t.v show. It was getting to the good points. I will love to see what happens next between clark and lois. I really hope that they come back next year because i was really enjoying it. I make my Fridays clear just for my show. Please don't cut them off competely there are some good acters that deserve to stay on Smallville. And plus what else would i be doing on a Friday night?

  • Hydrate3

those were crows, you can see then in episode 3 “supergirl”

  • blah!

finally this show is starting to get stupid. lex doesnt die this early! fuckers!

  • trmz

Actually, it is very possible that young Clark meets young Bruce. Bruce is still in trainng so he might not be at full capacity of his abilities which means he is still in a learning process, and the scenario doesn’t have to be either Gotham or Metropolis, it could be anywhere in the world where Bruce is sharping one of his skills like martial arts, chemistry, magic tricks or wtv.

In fact, Clark meeting with Bruce could be the key development for the two of them to grow up and get a different perspective of life from each other that will mark the beginning of their superhero lifestyles in the near future

  • D’oh

In season 9 Fate said that Lex would become his greatest enemy. I’m guessing that means he isn’t dead…

  • dadz31906

Is there going to be a justice league spin off on the way

  • Stevendunetz

Well give Tom Welling A new title name off the show a(not Smallville) and a uniform that this time fits! And call it Superman and bring back Michael Roseumbaum and now you can for sure have a good five year run! We but spin offs out there? Just regroup and start the future. Money talks when Tom and Michael are asked to start this idea of great spin offs. The rest of the spin offs will fail after one year. Get to the real Superman story as it should have been! Maybe Warner Brothers and The C.W. don’t want to spend that kind of money but rather spend it on a flop!
