Meet Samuel, Lost‘s Man In Black

If you thought that, at the very least, last night’s emotion-filled and thought-provoking Lost finale would finally reveal the name of the Man in Black — alias the Smoke Monster, alias the Security System, alias SLocke, alias Jacob’s sullen brother — well, you were wrong. His name never passed the lips of a character, not even in “Across the Sea,” which depicted his origin.

But he did have one: It’s the appropriately biblical Samuel (Hebrew for “name of God” or “God has heard”). In video from her Lost finale party, E! Online’s Kristin Dos Santos reports that although the name appears in the scripts, producers (obviously) decided against making it known to the audience.

She also reveals which Kwon was a candidate to replace Jacob and the purpose of the number 108 in the lighthouse.

even in the end lost still leaves one more mystery and fans hanging and looking for answers.

Actually it isn't Samuel – that was the name they used for casting, but by season five they were using false names for everyone to keep plot details under wraps (particularly given how many “young versions” of characters they kept introducing). Indeed the casting call for Jacob described the character's name as “Jason”. (I suppose Jason shares some phoenetics with Jacob, but so does Samuel with Smokey…)

Number 108 is obvious because that's how many minutes that elapsed before Desmond had to type in the numbers. And if it were biblical the Smoke Monster would have been named Esau.
