Jeremy Renner In Talks To Play Hawkeye In The Avengers

Confirming months-long rumors, Heat Vision reports that The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner is in final negotiations to play Hawkeye in The Avengers.

Renner will join Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson and Don Cheadle in the Marvel Studios adaptation that’s all but guaranteed to be directed by Joss Whedon. The Avengers is set to premiere on May 4, 2012.

Word of Renner’s involvement began circulating as far back as November, when the actor was quoted as saying he’d spoken to Marvel about playing Hawkeye in Thor. However, a month later, Renner said the reports were “blown way out of proportion,” and that the role was simply “an idea.”

“The only reason it came out this early, because Avengers is two years away, is that they’re thinking OK, we may throw him in Thor, we may not, as a cameo,” Renner told Movieline in December. “You know what I mean? So there’s truth that we talked about it, but there’s no truth to me doing it.”

Apparently something changed in six months; Heat Vision chalks it up to delays with an untitled project by Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood).

While Renner is best known for his Oscar-nominated performance in The Hurt Locker, he also co-starred in such films as 28 Weeks Later, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and S.W.A.T.

In other Marvel movie news, Deadline reports that Neal McDonough (Desperate Housewives, Tin Man) is in talks to play Dum Dum Dugan in Captain America: The First Avenger. He’ll join Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Sebastian Stan and Hayley Atwell in the Joe Johnston-directed film.

  • Bill Reed

Just watched The Hurt Locker the other day. He basically played Hawkeye in that, so… Yeah, I can see this.

  • Lando

As sad as this may sound, see him in S.W.A.T. The guy is born to play Clint.

  • demoncat

nice to know Hawk eye will be along with the other avengers. adding to their power. now if Marvel would decide to figure out how to fit vision and Scarlet witch in a future film. then good. now its just the long wait for the film to get made.

I kinda always thought that maybe Jarvis would eventually become the Vision… Ok, not true to the orgin, but if they could tie in Hank's involvement.. I think it could work

  • demoncat

that would be the best way to do Vision on screen. and also save Marvel having to try and find an actor and put him in a motion capture suit since the Vision would be cgi. plus the yellow and green of his original look would not work on film. though at least have Hawk eye in the film . can wait for vision for another film along with Scarlet witch

  • Grant

I remember Neal McDonough and Renner were fan picks for Cap. I kind of prefer Renner as Hawkeye though. He gets to play the cool supporting character. McDOnough is kind of a strange choice for Dugan but I can see it working.

Also it seems pretty early for Avengers casting news. So I'm thinking Clint is making an appearance in Thor or Captain America. Maybe in one of those teaser scenes after the credits.

  • demoncat

if Hawkeye is going to make a teaser it would be likely cap since captain america got hawk eye membership on the team in the comics. for thor really would not work to have hawk eye do an appearace. given the mystical back ground of the character. though Marvel may just save hawk eye for the avengers

Supposedly Janet Van Dyne was in Iron Man 2, so that says to me that The Wasp will be in The Avengers too (I didn't notice her but there was a quote from the actress who played her on some site I read).

  • demoncat

the way Marvel has been talking is the avengers would be about when the team first formed. so can see the wasp in it along with ant man plus. its now made official that Jeremy has inked the deal and will be wearing Hawk eyes threads and be using his bow and arrows. now if Marvel finishes off with adding Vision and Scarlet witch i will be one truely happy fan. even though my team of avengers is in the film already
