Nicolas Cage, <i>Crank</i> Directors In Talks For <i>Ghost Rider</i> Sequel

Crank directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor are in early negotiations to helm Columbia’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Heat Vision reports.

Unsurprisingly, Nicolas Cage is in early talks to reprise his role as Johnny Blaze, the stunt motorcyclist turned fiery, leather-clad avenging spirit. As we reported two months ago, the studio is in a hurry to begin production on the sequel by November to prevent the rights from automatically reverting to Marvel. Back in April, there was talk that Columbia might push forward without the busy Cage so that it can beat the deadline, but apparently that’s no longer the case.

Details of the script, written by FlashForward‘s Scott Gimple and Seth Hoffman under the supervision of David S. Goyer, are being kept under wraps. Heat Vision notes that Neveldine and Taylor are writers — they penned both Crank films, Gamer and Jonah Hex — but it’s unknown at this point whether they might rework the script.

The first Ghost Rider opened in February 2007 to almost universally terrible reviews — it has a 26-percent approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes — but went on to gross almost $230 million worldwide.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is produced by Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Michael De Luca and Steven Paul, with Goyer and Mark Steven Johnson executive producing.

So the plan is basically to go from bad to worse. Good strategy!

in other words they are still going to try and put out something at least to keep the rights but also are going to try and do it right at least try for odds are the thing will turnout to be another elektra

I've got mixed feelings, honestly. Storywise, I thought Daredevil was a better experience than Ghost Rider, while the latter had the better visuals. I remember being disappointed with the GR film, when I first saw it, but I'm fond of it now that I own the DVD, I just think it could have benefitted from a little more action. The critics attack some cheesy dialogue and story points, and I get that pov, but IMHO they're thinking too hard; it's a goofy, fun, guilty pleasure of a film, not to be taken seriously. It's truly a comic book.

So overall, I'm a little disappointed that Mark Steven Johnson isn't returning to direct. I do think he has a lot of potential as a filmmaker, that we haven't seen yet. I'm also concerned that it's being rushed into production, just to keep the rights. But we'll see….I haven't seen Gamer or Crank 2, but the first Crank was a lot of fun. As long as they can pay to keep the Rider on screen for a decent amount of time and insert some more action into the franchise, I think it'll pay off.

If they can make Crank with Ghost Rider in it, this will be the best movie ever.
