The Walking Dead Recruits New Actors & New Characters

Several new actors have joined the cast of The Walking Dead over the past few days. In addition to the recently announced Chandler Riggs as Carl Grimes, actors Linds Edwards and Jim Coleman have also reportedly signed on for roles in the currently shooting AMC adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s survival horror comic book series.

Both Edwards and Coleman are said to be playing new characters Leon Basset and Lambert “Lam” Kendal, respectively. The news was confirmed by Edwards himself in an interview with The Walking Dead Podcast, but the interview has since been pulled at the request of AMC.

Also recently announced was the casting of Emma Bell in the recurring role of a college student who seeks refuge with Rick Grimes and other survivors. Perhaps she’ll play Amy, the young sister to sharpshooter Andrea. In the comics, Andrea began as a mid-20s legal clerk, but the adaptation is adding a few years to the character with the casting of Laurie Holden in the role.

    New characters IS scary.

It always cracks me up when there's such a wealth of material in the source and yet men in suits can't help but fiddle.

This isn't what's happening at all. Kirkman HIMSELF has made it no secret that he doesn't want a step-for-step remake of the comic. That means new characters, existing characters who die sooner, and existing characters that live on that died in the comics.

All three of the above posts are based on knee-jerk reactions, lacking the facts of what the actual creator himself has supported.

I don't know why people are worried about new characters since the cast of Walking Dead has a pretty high turnover rate. For example, take a look at the picture at the top of the article and see how many of them are still alive as of the current issue. The good thing about Walking Dead is that if you don't like a character they probably won't be around for long. The bad thing about Walking Dead is that the characters you like have an equally good chance of getting bumped off.

I think the comic material should be left as is… but if its going to make the show even better than so be it. We'll see how it goes in october but for now lets just enjoy what we are reading.

This sounds like a great chance for Kirkman to change anything he didn't like in the comic. Tyreese might just live this time.

This show has a huge cast already, it doesn't need anymore folks. I don't like it BUUUUT I trust in the writers and the director and the strength of the cast. It'll work out fine.

I'm of two minds. I feel it's strong enough that it doesn't need additions. However, I can see where Kirkman wouldn't want a direct adaptation. I can't lie, for me, seeing direct adaptations isn't boring for me. The same way I love cover songs, I love seeing other peoples interpretations of material. Cover songs which add or change things are good as well, just not as good as a straight cover-in your own voice-would be. So too do I feel about adapted works.

so everybody here would rather watch an absolute word-for-word translation instead of something adapting to the needs of the new medium? And you'd rather that the TV version have no surprises for you in terms of changing characters deaths?

See, for me, I think the opposite. This sounds like a good thing, although overall I think that a TV show is going to naturally have more of a long-term supporting cast than 'The Walking Dead' really should.
