Is Timothy Olyphant The New Kurt Russell?

The Crazies director Breck Eisner’s next project is the upcoming Escape From New York remake. Few fans are fond of the idea of someone else stepping into Kurt Russell’s shoes as the eye patch-wearing badass Snake Plissken, but would those fans change their mind at the suggestion of Timothy Olyphant for the role?

Eisner was asked point blank whether or not he was entertaining the idea of casting his Crazies collaborator as Snake. Here’s what he had to say:

Creatively, [Olyphant] would be great for it. We have not yet discussed internally within the studio who will play Snake Plissken. There are many factors that go into those discussions. First and foremost, obviously, is the creative one. We can’t make the movie unless we get the perfect Snake Plissken, and that’s a tall order. There are very few guys that could do it. He would definitely be one of the guys who could. There is no question about that.

In addition to his leading role in The Crazies, Olyphant has played his fair share of badasses such as Agent 47 in Hitman, Sheriff Seth Bullock on Deadwood and, most recently, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens on FX’s Justified. Olyphant isn’t exactly a household name, but there’s no question that he can pull off a take-no-prisoners attitude while exuding plenty of charm. Maybe, just maybe, Olyphant is the perfect successor to Kurt Russell.

What do you think? Could Olyphant win you over as Snake Plissken?

I've always despised Kurt Russell, whereas Timothy Olyphant is nearly always the best thing on screen in whatever he's acting in – he just oozes self-confidence, grit & charisma. So no, not the new Kurt Russell, but definitely an actor deserving of a major break-through and a streak of badass genre flicks (but originals would be better than remakes).

I oppose this idea on principal, but Timothy Olyphant is great on Justified and should stick to playing Raylan Givens.

I'm always amazed that someone like Kurt Russell is “despised.” What the hell did he ever do to warrant being despised? Geez, that's weird. I don't really consider Escape from New York to be some kind of sacred movie, but Olyphant is one of the truly great up and coming actors. He's just unbelievably good in Justified, so if they can film the movie during that awesome series' hiatus I'm fine with it.

    Tijmen, you're a turd taster.

I don't think a remake needs to be made, or is even a good use of money and talent.

But, if it has to be remade, I am perfectly fine with Seth Bullock as Snake.

While I generally like Kurt Russell, I recently watched EfNY for the first time and really did not enjoy it. I could go for a remake, and I could easily see Olyphant as Snake.
