British TV Viewers, You Disappoint Me

British TV Viewers, You Disappoint Me

Despite initial fears about his age, Matt Smith has impressed me as the new Doctor Who, and new showrunner Steven Moffat has done the same; I think the new season has been the strongest the show’s been since its relaunch in 2005. So why are British viewers abandoning the series?

According to reports, Who has dropped from 7.2 million viewers on average for the last season to 6 million this year in the UK. Why? Was David Tennant that much of a draw, or have audiences simply grown bored of the adventures of a Time Lord and his cute companion? Haven’t they noticed that the writing is so much better this year? Sometimes I despair – but the BBC, apparently, doesn’t; their response is that the audience has stayed consistent, once internet and time-shifted viewers are factored in. Not to mention everyone torrenting the show in the US, of course.

You have to seriously factor in the fact that it hasn't had a steady timeslot all season. You can see how much here: http://www.denofgeek.com/television/519121/why_…

Frankly, as an American, it's amazing to me that people are tuning in at all, and that the BBC still has faith in the show despite bouncing it around. Here in the States, this would be a sure sign of a show getting canned.

They are not abandoning it. The “drop in rating” reports are not factoring in the online viewing and DVR viewing numbers that where included in the previous seasons ratings.

    As the article says:
“Despite the apparently disappointing figures, managers at the BBC claim overall viewer numbers are the same because many people watch on the internet or after recording it at home. “

We'll ignore that the final episode was on the hottest saturday of the year so far, during the world cup and a HOUR earlier than usual?
I'm a major fan and I DVR-ed it because i was enjoying the sun

Watch the Moffat interview by his son on youtube where SM explains that the overnights are nowhere near as important as they used to be

Please do some research before you post about Doctor Who again.
There is plenty of information out there to tell you that:
    * BBC iplayer viewing has gone way up for Doctor Who, I think one episode was the most watched ever on it.
    * It is the World Cup, the most sporting event of the year to many Brits. We watch it with friends or at the Pub, and Pub's don't tend to show Sci-Fi shows.
    * There's a heatwave at the moment! Everyone here is outside having BBQs or playing with their children, not inside watching TV!

In fact the audience has been the second strongest of the new series, just behind the first. And there are signs that these articles are just badly researched all over.

The sunny days, the World Cup, Wimbledon etc. prevented the initial numbers being all that big? But it's nonsense till the final numbers, usually 3 million up, for the repeats, the HD channel, iPlayer, etc. etc. etc. come in. We do know the BBC HD channel announced the first part of the finale was the largest audience they've ever gotten full stop, so you can't take the panic too seriously. The show is the BBC's flagship drama, it's in no trouble at all, and there couldn't be less real cause to panic, as the show's never been better.

    Full stop.

I used to be so excited about DoctorWho but not any more … boring stories, poor acting – David Tennant was 'the' DoctorWho + his female companions were feisty, interesting, and drew you in … not any more + there was always the possibility of seeing Capt. Jack .. not any more.

Frankly, the new guy just doesn't have the David Tennant magnetism. And the new girl is just too much of a smartass. Also, I remarked last night to my wife that there just doesn't seem to be the continuity between episodes that the previous run had. Frankly, I only watch it now because I know that Graham Norton is on next, and there is nothing else on Saturday night.
