Marvel No Like Edward Norton. Marvel Hire New Hulk.

Marvel Studios’ The Avengers is easily one of the most anticipated superhero movie releases of all time, with the studio laying groundwork for the major motion picture event in films like Iron Man, Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America. There was also a memorable cameo appearance by Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark at the end of 2008′s The Incredible Hulk, but according to a new report, The Avengers will make one very significant departure from the Jade Giant’s most recent appearance — Edward Norton won’t be reprising his role as Bruce Banner, with the part going to an unknown actor.

The lack of Norton in The Avengers is reportedly not because the actor doesn’t want to be a part of the film. According to Drew McWeeny at HitFix, Marvel will announce the full lineup of Avengers at Comic-Con in a couple of short weeks, with an unknown actor filling the role of Bruce Banner. McWeeny reports that Norton’s interest in The Avengers went so far as the actor taking a meeting with not-confirmed-but-come-on-really director Joss Whedon about the project. Although Norton wants to be a part of the film, McWeeny indicates that Marvel has moved on, presumably for financial reasons.

McWeeny writes:

I’ve got calls in to sources on both ends of the story to try to figure out exactly how far apart the Marvel offer and the Norton camp are in terms of money, but even in early conversations, it sounds like a deal could be made here, and simply wasn’t. Norton’s desire to return to the role was so palpable at SXSW, and that was before he met with Whedon, that I can’t imagine he would refuse to negotiate or find some way to satisfy Marvel. so the question is really why won’t Marvel try to make Norton happy at all when he obviously brings so much weight to the team?

Right now, Marvel appears to have moved on. I’m hoping it’s not too late for them to go back to Norton and make things right. I hope that after whatever he discussed with Whedon, his enthusiasm wouldn’t be dampened by a business hiccup. Fingers crossed, there’s still time to fix this before Comic-Con. Prove to us in San Diego that you’re doing “The Avengers” right. Show us that it matters to you. Tell us that continuity does matter, and that you’re prepared to make one of the biggest movies of all time.

Or cheap out. It’s your call.

But I promise you… fandom is paying attention. And your next move will say volumes about which way “The Avengers” is heading.

“Avengers assemble” is more than just a nifty slogan for a ball cap. It’s a call to arms for a one-of-a-kind movie event. Please… treat it that way. The rewards will be worth the effort.

Do you agree with McWeeny here? Is Marvel making a grave mistake if Norton isn’t hired to play Bruce Banner in The Avengers, or are you fine with an unknown actor stepping into the Hulk’s oversized purple pants?

EDWARD NORTON IS BRUCE BANNER. NO ONE ELSE SHOULD DO IT.

  • nickmarino

they already messed things up w/ Rhodey, so i doubt they'll worry about Banner. it's about $$$, then continuity. not complaining so much as observing.

  • Coryjameson

I'm not sure this is a mistake. If the Avengers is going to be three films and it's going to have several very big name stars (Chris Evans and the guy playing Thor aren't really big names but they're really attractive) then clearly money has already become an issue. And if they're going to want to keep Whedon on for three movies and if the first one becomes a blockbuster, then CLEARLY they have to do preemptive financial damage control RIGHT NOW.

Besides, Edward Norton's star is in clear decline WHICH IS WHY HE'S SO DESPERATE TO BE PART OF THIS PROJECT.

  • Uncle Nobs

The Rhodey comparison rings true to me, but for different reasons. Marvel and the directors of Hulk & Iron Man all had problems working with Ed Norton & Terrence Howard, respectively. It may have less to do with money and more to do with not being a pain in the ass.

That said, if they stick with the story where recruiting the Hulk turns out to be a terrible mistake, Norton can bring a lot to the pseudo-villain role. While I love Whedon, he'll need a GREAT actor to keep him from falling into his habit of making his villains two-dimensional.

  • Matt

it would be a mistake to let Norton go. He was good Banner. Whats the point of linking all the films if your going to keep changing actors?

  • nickmarino

    good point.

building off the notion of the characters, if i was Marvel, i'd hire Millar to plot it, Bendis to dialogue it, some vet to script the whole thing, and Whedon to get the best performances out of the actors. to me, that'd ensure solid characterization.

  • nik

Big mistake on Marvel's part. Norton is a fantastic actor who has a passion for the Hulk, what more could Marvel want? They should have known from the start that a project this ambitious was going to cost something. Pry open the wallet, Marvel, and make a real Avenger's movie.

  • Zach

As I recall, Edward Norton was a pain on the Hulk set, so of course he gets replaced.

  • http://www.mondomagazine.net Owen

That's disappointing. I really liked Norton as Banner. I hope it's not too late for this to be fixed, although I suspect it is. This makes me sad.

  • http://twitter.com/tomdaylight tomdaylight

Two dimensional Whedon villains… are you kidding? Joss Whedon has created some of the deepest, most layered, complex villains to ever appear on television.

  • http://twitter.com/tomdaylight tomdaylight

I think recasting War Machine was not good for Iron Man 2 (the two actors were just too different) and I hope common sense prevails here one way or the other… Marvel should think carefully about why it's putting this film together.

  • Rich

“Marvel should think carefully about why it's putting this film together.”

    Really? $$$$.

This movie will make a ton of money regardless of who plays Hulk. That said, I thought Norton did a great job in the role and I'd like to see him stay. But, I understand where the studio is coming from if they're already paying big bucks to Downey, Jackson, and Johansson along with lesser money for Evans, Renner, Whedon, Hemsworth, and so forth. Not to mention whoever winds up playing the villain(s).

  • Myxlplyx

Didn't like Norton in Hulk. Happy to see him replaced.

  • Myxlplyx

Really seeing another lackluster performance by Nortan as Hulk could be the straw that would keep me out of theatres.

  • CBGuru

I'm a huge Norton fan as an actor and would love to see him as Hulk. BUT he has a terrible on-set reputation as a control freak who insists on re-writing scripts and usurping the director. Marvel may not want such a disruptive force on a set that will already be hard to control with all the characters/plots going on. Seems like the reason if he is willing to be reasonable on money.

  • Crov

    EDWARD NORTON ALL THE WAY!

  • Ragudad

In fairness Terrance Howard should NEVER have been cast as Rhodey. He's too much of a lady-man.

  • Darkstream69

If this is true, it sucks!

Edward Norton needs to be in this film as Bruce Banner/the Hulk! He's one of the incentives for me to go out and see it in theatres.

Next we'll probably be hearing that Robert Downey Jr. will not be appearing as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the film.

  • http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com Bill Reed

    Eric Bana?

  • Mr.Nailsin

There's not enough information here to know what really happened. It could be Norton's fault but it's sad all around because he did a great job as Banner and it'll be hard to replace him.

  • Sugarglid3r

Norton was GREAT as Banner. I have no desire to see someone else in the role.

Money is an issue? Are you kidding me? Like Marvel doesn't have enough in their coffers to meet Norton's offer. The film will make tons of money, and if they cast another unknown in the role it may falter. It certainly will with me. The more I hear about Avengers, the less I like it. A 20 something as Cap, Hulk as a possible villain (!), maybe no Norton, more than likely fifteen different new origin stories to juggle plus an overarching plot, and the unfortunate news of Bendis' involvement.

I'm curious, but I'm very skeptical.

    KEEP NORTON.

  • Jconstantine

It would be criminal to miss out on seeing actors as dynamic as Ed Norton and Robert Downey Jr interact with one another in the Marvel Universe. Come on, Marvel.

  • Grant

It wouldn't deter me from seeing the movie but I'm a little bummed out. But a lot of people could play Banner.

  • Bassmonster

Norton isn't just one of the finest actors around — he also WRITES. 'His' version of HULK has the script penned by him but for some 'unspecified contractual reasons' he wasn't credited for that at all.
Now you have the 'hint' why Norton is no longer considered in spite of being eager, more than good and co-operative.
    BUT!…
THE MAN WRITES. HE IS CREATIVE.
Hence, everything but elligible for the House of Ideas' moviedrome.

  • Josh

I get trying to say money but it's not like Edward Norton is going to demand something 20mil. At least get the best actors for the roles, I know recasting happens but this is pretty blatant and stupid. I mean if the Cap movie doesn't sell like hotcakes are they going to replace Chris Evans too?

  • Rich

    “A 20 something as Cap”

Makes no sense to complain about that. Cap signed up for WWII while he was an art student. When the war ended and he was frozen in 1945, he shouldn't have been older than about 25. There's no reason to cast an older actor unless the story takes place 10-15 years after he was discovered on ice by the Avengers.

I hate the way acting talent is seen as being so disposable. I’ve seen other comic fan sites nearly start petitions to hang Tom Cruise because he had a high asking price to play Stark. Norton’s contribution was a worthy and necessary contribution to Marvel’s growing library of films. Zack Penn and Norton's direction and portrayal of Banner was far more human than Ang lee and Eric Bana's effort and Banner's portrayal of the original movie. In a Hulk story, most of the narrative exposition is (usually) communicated by Banner. Just because industry behind-the-scenes participants want a bigger paycheck doesn’t mean the film will not be remembered for who appeared on screen.

Despite Don Cheadle’s excellent performance, I still think Terrance Howard is the Ironman franchise’s Rhodey. Regardless of Marvel’s smear campaign, I can’t wait to see how much audiences hate Marvel’s decision to ditch Howard when Marvel eventually decides to market the box set. When you are trying to make a fast buck you forget how audiences are likely to appraise the whole enterprise later. Marvel thinks within 10 years we can now handle a third Bruce Banner. Thanks Marvel.

After all, one of the cast members from the current Batman franchise won an Oscar so we have to be more careful today regarding creative decision making and inclusion. Though this hasn’t been one of finer aspects of Marvel’s reputation (remember company responses to Stan Lee collaborators like Kirby, Ditko, etc.) treating your creative participants like garbage does help audiences see the entire enterprise as garbage. In the past when comics were still considered pop cultural dreck, it wasn’t as necessary to consider fine inclusions of developmental participants. Unfortunately few remember how Downey Jr.’s drug addicted reputation was an obstacle to even getting the franchise started. Unlike Robert or Gwyneth, Terrance was the only stainless pony in Marvel’s stable. Therefore the movie would not have been made without him. His wanting an increase in his paycheck did not make him an egotist or a zealot. Regardless of how producers were seduced by the roaring call of money, Terrance Howard deserved far better than the ugly treatment he received at sequel planning time. And we as greedy comic’s consumers rushed back to the sequel and proved that Marvel was right; we would forget Howard for the sake of a few well-anticipated thrills.

Think of how much better the thrills would have been if they had been delivered by the same actors whom we saw support Downey’s Stark in the prior movie. The Box set will not be able to supply that emotion affirming continuity either. If anything needs avenging it is Terrance Howard’s reputation.

I believe marvel is doing its absolute best to make sure general audiences associate comic book movies with being dreck again. And I think they should reconsider their strategy.

What we the fans have to understand is that Marvel is choosing a potential novice actor in favor of Norton’s potentially far finer acting skill and directorial logic. I want to respect Whedon’s judgment but let’s face it many don’t expect the Hulk to be a long term member of that franchise anyway. And Norton’s salary may have kept some executives from splitting a hire fraction of the last Hulk’s payday but it did not sour the film. As usual the replacement of Banner actor puts the quality of the overall narrative in danger.

That decision making is scary, whether Marvel cares about its reputation or not! We want the Avengers movie to be about action, but understanding the characters is key to appreciating the heroes collaboration (dysfunctional or not). Despite a lot of poor attempts from the past, this is the first A-list superhero team-up in history and I hope Marvel doesn’t mess it up by assuming the audience will stomach lower quality.

  • Samuel Davis

Marvel would be VERY stupid to pass up on Norton being The Hulk/Banner. Norton actually helped edit the script to help the movie stay on track. The Incredible Hulk was AWESOME! I hope this isnt true

  • Daredevil99

I forget that everyone here works at Marvel/Disney and knows what went down…thats great

  • Madcattv2

I liked Norton as Bruce Banner and would like to see him return…but…

IF the Hulk has more screen time than Banner…does it really make a difference who plays him?
(But for sake of continuity, bring Norton back!)

  • demoncat_4

Marvel has got to be out their minds since fans have shown with the other solo films they are so use to certain actors like Robert as iron man in the roles that to decide that now Ed should not be the hulk or banner and bring in a new player late in the game. that is marvel trying to follow a page from foxes play book with marvel films. for they should let Ed be hulk he works as hulk and banner. if nothing else cut out some other avengers like sadly hawk eye.

  • RickNelson

Edward Norton is a great actor. As Banner/Hulk he was no better than Eric Bana. Both movies were forgotten immediately.

  • Nuckolhead

I really liked Norton as Banner and would have loved to see him come back, but I agree, he doesen't really seem like a team player. If he's going to be an obstruction, move on and cast someone who can commit to a long-term vision for the Avengers family of movies.

  • Leonard Blunk

I think that Marvel is making a big mistake here. There is a whole base of fans who had never heard of the Hulk until the films with Edward Norton. As it stands now Marvel would have to limit Banner's screen time and increase the Hulks's which means more special effects which dig into the film's budget!
I don't think that the producers and studio excets really understand how fan bases are created and build a following which are loyal to their idol!

  • Immaculatewang

Meh. He phoned in his performance in that movie anyway. I preferred the 2003 version.

  • http://www.myspace.com/willdockery Will Dockery

I suppose with the previous announcement this is a done deal, and Norton is definitely out of the Hulk game?

  • Diggz

Anyone can say that Ed Norton was not their first choice to be the alter-ego to the Green Goliath, but that is the actor Marvel went with. My biggest concern with the Avengers flick is that the powers that be will not be able to sign on all the respective actors from their solo films to make an all-star ensemble. They should suck it up and come to terms with Norton and give us fanboys a unique movie which will redefine comic book movies like Chris Nolan has with done with the Batman films so far.

  • Diggz

i agree about the IM 2 recasting. The movie did not have a smooth flow to it as a result of the lack of chemistry, and the fact that the villain was a terrible combination of the crimson dynamo and whiplash. They should have made a armor suit for Vanko's bird. Not to mention that the ending was very anticlimatic as well.

  • Marvelmessesup

Iron Man 2 sucked. Hulk 2 sucked. Avengers will suck.
