Box Office Surprise: Vampires Less Popular Than Steve Carell

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse may have broken box office records when it opened last week, but apparently vampires don’t sparkle in the long-term; the evil geniuses behind animated movie Despicable Me managed to steal the box office crown this weekend.

Grossing much higher than initial estimates, Me achieved $60.1 million since its release on Friday, making it the second highest non-Pixar, non-sequel animated movie ever. Eclipse, meanwhile, fell 49% compared with its opening weekend, which actually means it fares better than the earlier two movies in the series (which fell 62 and 70%), and makes it more successful than second movie New Moon.

The third most successful movie this weekend, again outgrossing estimates, was Predators; Toy Story 3 and The Last Airbender filled out the top 5.

I contributed, but to be fair, it was the only thing I could take my grandma to see. But it was very cute.

I thorougly enjoyed “Despicable Me.” By contrast, “Eclipse” was unmitigated crap. That's two hours and 13 dollars I'll never see again.

Oddly, I saw “The Last Airbender” and was pleasantly surprised. It was significantly better than I had expected. I don't have any knowledge of the series, however, so I have little to compare it to. But it was certainly a much better viewing experience than “Eclipse”.
