Norton Responds To Marvel, Fans: ‘Hulk Is Bigger Than All Of Us’

After a weekend marked by pointed exchanges about Marvel’s decision not to cast Edward Norton in The Avengers, the actor has responded with a statement thanking his fans and offering his appreciation to the studio for giving him “the chance to be a part of the Hulk’s long and excellent history.”

What’s been dubbed as “NortonGate” began on Friday with an unflattering statement from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirming that Norton would not reprise his role as Bruce Banner in The Avengers. “Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors,” Feige wrote, “but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts.”

That drew a sharp reply from Norton’s agent, who called Feige’s remarks “offensive” and “a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light.”

Norton himself responded this afternoon on his Facebook page, taking the high road in a public feud that certainly could have gotten uglier:

As most of you know, I don’t like to talk much about the business of making movies because it means a lot to me to protect the audience’s fullest enjoyment of the ‘magic’ that films can have. But I am so appreciative of the outpouring of support from fans of the Hulk and the Avengers that I feel it would be rude not to respond. So here goes: It seems it won’t work out for me to continue playing Bruce Banner for Marvel in The Avengers. I sincerely hoped it would happen and be great for everyone, but it hasn’t turned out as we all hoped. I know this is disappointing to many people and that makes me sad. But I am very sincerely grateful to Marvel for extending the offer and even more so for giving me the chance to be a part of the Hulk’s long and excellent history. And I really can’t thank the fans enough for how much enthusiasm you’ve sent my way about what Louis [Leterrier] and I tried to do in our turn with the legend. It means a lot to me. I grew up with Banner and the Hulk and have been a fan of every incarnation. I’m really proud, and very blessed, to have been one of them and will be thrilled to see him live on through other actors. Hulk is bigger than all of us, that’s why we love him, right?

Marvel is expected to announce “a name actor” to replace Norton during its July 24 panel at Comic-Con International. Directed by Joss Whedon (although the studio hasn’t made that official), The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson and several others, likely including Jeremy Renner. The movie opens on May 4, 2012.

Hulk is the biggest there is!

A very classy way to end this. Bravo, Mr. Norton!

The only problem I have ever had with Ed Norton is that it takes him way too long to address and hit a golf ball…

  • Radiate

Is that really Ed Norton's official facebook page despite it actually saying it is? I don't buy it. Anyone could have easily forged that statement, especially as it's just a JPEG file uploaded onto the “Photos” section…

  • iJacksparrow

It is. Banner took the high road. What a class act. He IS Bruce Banner to me. No matter if Marvel tries to tell me otherwise.

  • Joseph

Yes very classy. I bet Norton decided against it because he undoubtedly would have next to nothing to do as Banner in the film

  • Michael

Um. Could they maybe get Eric Bana for the role? I would have liked Norton, but someone who's actually played it on screen might go down better with a mainstream audience, assuming the character is still meant to be Bruce Banner.

  • Tridon4life

Norton is the man. This was such a classy and respectable way to end this “feud” and you really have to give it to him for standing up and letting the world know his feelings. I won't mind either Adrian Brody or Joaquin Phoenix in the role, but I highly doubt they'll be better than Norton.

  • shawn

He was great as banner, and marvel's constant rebooting and recasting of people is getting very annoying very quickly.

  • bc_scrubs

Nicely done Mr Norton. A very classy and dignified way to end this issue. All the best in your future endevours you will be missed I assure you.

Ed Norton in his comments was about a 100 times classier than Marvel was to him in their wrong headed and idiotic dismissal of him.

Mr. Norton, it's indeed a shame that you aren't able to continue as Banner. Your portrayal of him in “The Incredible Hulk” was spot on; and may I say, Bill Bixby would have been proud.

  • Mr_Wayne

@ shawn: AMEN!!!!! It's tainting the comic book film genre!

I have no idea what this means, but it's funny.

Classy of norton but his agent is a jerk off i mean honestly and to be honest i thought he gave the worst performance of his career in that film it wasn't just the mindless action script it was just i never felt bad or took him seriously no one cared about him that final fight should have me on the edge of my seat and emotonal but it was awam bam thank you mam a forgettable final fight for a forgettable film.I'll giv him credit for that ending where he smiles loved it did great but other than that he was flat.Mabey they didn't hire him because he's to expensive or mabey and ths one is easy to believe they're afraid he'll try and add to much to the film i mean he re wrote hulks script and with the avengers it isn't needed nor would anyone really be happy with him he put's to much input in and that get's you a bad reputation with studios. When you ruin they're plans for a film that is an ensemble type story it doesn't work out and i know it wouldn't work.Sorry to sound as though i'm hating but norton just wouldn't have worked out in avenegrs unless he was willing to shut up give 100%(unlike before)and do his job.

Is anyone ever going to get the hulk right? First Eric Bana then Norton.Lets see how the next guy does,i hope he compliments their 'talented ' cast…sheez.

  • gorillamydreamz

Mr. Norton takes the high road, hopefully ends this unpleasantness and proves he's a class act all the way.

I am glad to have had his intelligent, exciting take on Bruce Banner and the Incredible Hulk if only for one imminently rewatchable movie.

    Thank you!

What? “Mabey” you need to learn proper punctuation, grammar and spelling before going on the internet and raving about other people's writing.
