CCI: Marvel Reveals Infinity Gauntlet From Thor

CBR’s coverage of Comic-Con International 2010 is brought to you by Star Wars Celebration 5 and the following sponsors:

More details about Marvel’s Thor emerged today at Comic-Con International with the unveiling of the Infinity Gauntlet, the glove crafted in the comics by Thanos to harness the power of the Infinity Gems. Just how the Gauntlet and the sentient Gems — and, perhaps, the Mad Titan himself — fit into the film remains to be seen.

A quick primer: Created by Jim Starlin, Thanos is a Death-obsessed Eternal bent on genocide and galactic conquest. The Infinity Gems — initially called the Soul Gems — are six immensely powerful stones, each granting its bearer with mastery over one aspect of the universe: Mind, Reality, Time, Space, Soul and Power. Combined on the Infinity Gauntlet, they make the user omnipotent.

Loki has possessed the Infinity Gems in Marvel comics, so there’s a decent chance that the god of mischief could be wearing the Gauntlet in Kenneth Branaugh’s film.

Opening on May 6, 2011, Thor stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Jamie Alexander and Anthony Hopkins.

Did they specifically say Thor – is mum on it.

  • Al Spader

    Its the wrong hand! LAME!!!!!

  • Brother Justin Crowe

Maybe the picture is flipped, Al!! LAME!!!!!

  • VanGoghX

Thanos reigns supreme! All hail Thanos and his bride Death!
(BTW: Mistress Death happens to be my sister! You can probably see the family resemblance.) ;-)

  • Jrau18

Seriously? Of all the things you can complain about, it's that it's the wrong hand? Can't they sue the gauntlet to reshape it for the other hand!?

  • Donald

Was it specifically called the Infinity Gauntlet? Maybe just something that looks like it? Maybe a Red Herring? If it is the Infinity Gauntlet, hopefully Loki steals it at the end to set up the Avengers movie.

  • comic fan

There is no way this connects this to the plot. this must just be an Easter egg that will be in the film that is getting shown off at comic con for fans. if Thanos was going to be in Thor people would know by now

  • George S.

I don't think the Infinity Gauntlet is in Thor inasmuch as it's a segue to the Avengers. Which I hope it is.

  • Al Pratt

    B I N G O

  • whodatbe?

it will probably be a background thing. ie cap's shield in iron man

WTF? awesome!!! it actually would make sense if the Infinity Gauntlet was in either Thor or Avengers because Marvel has been pretty obvious about using it and Thanos lately. there's that new out-of-the-blue Thanos mini going on right now and their Super Hero Squad Show center around an Infinity Gems-like plot. you can pretty much discern Marvel's media future lately by following what characters / scenarios pop up, and then seeing what other mediums they drift into.

  • Jrau18

It wasn't really “Out-of-the-blue” seeing as it was the next logical step after Realm of Kings… A universe filled with life can only be fought by death. Who's the avatar of death? Thanos.

  • Yanks5179

I'm assuming it's just a fun prototype considering it's the wrong hand, wrong gem colorings, etc. I mean, how hard can it be to look at any of the thousands of pictures of it in comics and get the look correct, right?

I think it'll be a background thing, a little easter egg for us comic fans who understand the importance of it, like the “purple pants” mention in Hulk, or the “Ten Rings” in Iron Man, or the computer scene in X2 that had Gambit, Jamie Madrox, and Project: Wideawake shown on it, etc.

But the more I see of this movie, the more excited I am for it.

And some said somewhere Thanos' new mini came out of nowhere. It's actually been building since he was killed off in Annihilation by Drax. It's absolutely not “out of the blue” if you've been reading the Annihilation, Annihilation: Conquest, War of Kings, Realm of Kings trail through Marvel's cosmic books the past few years.

You know what this is? This is Marvel cramming as much stuff into their movies as possible to secure copyrights.

I don't blame them but the films are going to suffer for it unless it's done right.

  • Redvector

I agree, hopefully this will be a segue to the Avengers, like Thor's hammer was at the end of IM2.

It would be cool if Thanos is the big bad that the Avengers face. Maybe an ongoing war with him that spreads across three films.

  • Slyfer

Sweet Mary Mother of God, Marvel you sly bastards!

  • Khiaao

Interesting.. I doubt Thanos is in the movie, would be cool

  • Kelly

Doesn't Marvel want to save a few surprises for the actual movie?

  • Lando

dude, don't give them the idea to sue, they def would try too.

so put this shit together: we have the skrulls, the infinity gauntlet, thanos and hulk running amok and considering or not loky behind the scene lafing his ass of the suffering he set in motion to screw his brother and those friends of his in midgard oll of in 3D. just put a loud powermetal song in the climatic battle sequence. im gonna check my brain in a loker before see this movie of risk posible brain damage caused from awesomenes

  • Mwedmer

Well they have already established in the Red Skull portion of the Cap footage, that the Cosmic cube was an Asgardian bit of tech. So It makes sense that the gauntlet would also be established as being Asgardian Tech.
Odin probably wears it because he is the all-Father. Loki probably steals it after he kills him and takes over Asgard.

don't mix comics continuity with the films. They are their own thing and comic book continuity changes every few years while the films will stay the same forever.

  • Greg Burt

I love the addition, but why not just have the gems. the gauntlet was thanos, I thought it was just a convenient way for him to hold them all. If you were in charge of guarding the gems, wouldn't it make a lot more sense not to put them all in one place. But none of this really matters as others have said, it's probably just some easter egg for a future production.

  • Jeff T

It all links together. The scene shown from Captain America is the Red Skull (pre-skull-mask) finding one of the gems. So they're combining ideas, ie; the Infinity gauntlet and the Cosmic Cube.

  • Russ

Well, there has to be a sequel to Avengers :)

  • TonyStark1

Thanos mounts the six Infinity Gems, (collected in the The Thanos Quest limited series), on his left glove to form the Infinity Gauntlet, the focus of the title of the series. Each Gem grants its bearer complete mastery over one aspect of the universe: Time, Space, Mind, Soul, Reality, and Power. Now all-powerful and desperate to win the affections of Death, Thanos decides to offer the entity a gift of love by erasing half the sentient life in the universe.

The surviving heroes on Earth band together — guided by a newly-resurrected hero Adam Warlock — to battle Thanos. In a bid to impress Death, Thanos allows the heroes a slight chance of winning, but defeats and kills almost all of them. Thanos then goes on to imprison the cosmic pantheon — consisting of Galactus; the Stranger; the Titan Kronos; Epoch; the entities Love and Hate; two Celestials; Master Order and Lord Chaos; and Eternity — before losing the Gauntlet in a moment of carelessness to space pirate Nebula.

Nebula inadvertently undoes all of Thanos' actions, and after another battle with the heroes and cosmic deities loses the Gauntlet to Adam Warlock. Thanos then appears to commit suicide by detonating a nuclear bomb rather than be taken prisoner, but actually retreats to contemplate his loss.

The Infinity Gauntlet will be featured in the upcoming film, Thor. Then, which film it is to be in is being kept secret as of July 2010, while teases that it will play a part in the Marvel films after the current Avengers arc.

  • TonyStark1

Look for THANOS in the Avengers movie, Labeled “Earth's Mightiest Heroes”, the Avengers originally consisted of Ant-Man, Wasp, Thor, Iron Man, and The Hulk. Captain America joined in issue #4. The rotating roster has become a hallmark of the team, although one theme remains consistent: the Avengers fight the foes no single superhero can withstand — hence their battle cry, “Avengers Assemble!” The team has featured humans, mutants, robots, gods, aliens, supernatural beings, and even former villains.

  • nickmarino

well, something i did forget that's out-of-the-blue was the Avengers & the Infinity Gauntlet all-ages book Marvel is doing right now. the whole reason for it existing that i can discern, other than it being an ahead of the curve movie tie-in, is maybe Marvel needed to publish something with Infinity Gauntlet in the title to maintain the trademark.

and as an outsider to the Marvel cosmic stuff looking in, The Thanos Imperative does seem a bit unfounded and immediate to me. if they suddenly brought the Scarlet Witch back in Avengers stuff I'm not reading, i'd be like “oh they've been building up to this,” but Thanos was rather unceremoniously killed in Annihilation and hasn'tt been mentioned much until six months ago (or even less, right?).

I think it is just a “teaser” for an appearance in a later Marvel movie. Perhaps the Avengers, perhaps even something further down the line.

As an Aussie science fiction writer I’ve been a Marvel Thor fan since the original Journey into Mystery of August 1962.

Strange little thought had popped in to my head here on the topic. Could these possibly be the norn stones of norse legend mixed in with the concepts of the infinity gaunlet as a way to bypass Thanos and give the avengers a bigger threat to contend with. Also at the con was it actually revealed as the infinity gaunlet or is it just assumed? To me it seems more likely to be the norn stones that Odin would have forged in to a gaunlet. Just some food for thought.

After watching the awesome cartoon The Superhero Squad Show, I was expecting great things for the Infinity Gauntlet in Thor.
Very disappointing appearance (or lack thereof) of the Infinity Gauntlet in Thor.
It was only used as a “trophy” in Asgaards artifact room.
Wasn’t mentioned or used by anyone.
Got to see more of the creepy Eye of Agamotto (also from Superhero Squad Show).

Hawkeye’s cameo was more exciting than this.
