CCI: WB Releases Green Lantern Character Posters

CBR’s coverage of Comic-Con International 2010 is brought to you by Star Wars Celebration 5 and the following sponsors:

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the Comic-Con International-exclusive character teaser posters for Green Lantern that, in addition to showcasing stars Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, give us our first official glimpses of Mark Strong as Sinestro and Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond. As a bonus, they also give a no to the Green Lantern oath.

Directed by Martin Campbell, Green Lantern also stars Jay O. Sanders, Temuera Morrison, Taika Waititi, Angela Bassett, Tim Robbins and Jon Tenney. Here’s the official synopsis:

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax … he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.

Green Lantern opens on June 17, 2011.

Hopefully they don't make Sinestro look to over the top. Posters look good. Like that they are actually using the GLC motto from the comics.

  • Mr. M

    I like 'em!

  • Don Rickles

They shoulda got Stan Lee to play Sinestro.

  • Akwasi

like the yellow fear tinge on Hammond

  • Danielklos

    That's a lot of mustache.

  • Sandor Clegane

Very cool. Sinestro looks perfect. And Sarsgaard looks perfectly creepy as poor 'ol Hector.

For all the hype of the Avengers movies, I think Green Lantern is gonna sneak up on a lot of people.

  • Eric

    Scar on Sinestro. Weird.

As apparently the only person on the internet who really liked the costume debut, I feel like I can say I'm disappointed in these posters without being accused of fannish whinging. I like *that* the motto is being used, but the way its broken up makes no sense, especially if a.) you're a casual moviegoer who's never heard of Green Lantern and b.) you're not viewing them all together. If this was a con exclusive, that takes care of the first part, but viewing them individually (or even in pairs) causes some distinct design problems.

Also: “he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity.” Mega-groan. Making Hal the greatest Green Lantern ever is a bit of light ethnocentrism on behalf of Earthers, understandable given that GL is written by humans; broadening (or narrowing) the sense of “humanity” in this way, though, runs a bit contrary to the spirit of the Corps.

Want me to call the wahhhhhhhhhmbulance for you or you got it?

  • Wonton John

That was so Grade A fanboyism and bi#ching! CONGRATS!

  • http://twitter.com/FasterthanShaun Shaun Manning

Oh, come now. I supported my bitching with arguments. And I'm going for aesthetics rather than “aaaaaaaah that's not Green Lantern aaaaaaaaaah!” I'm looking forward to the movie, but bad design is bad design.

  • Karaokefanboy

Agreed — I hope this was a Con exclusive distributed as one piece, or just parts of a larger poster we'll see in theater lobbies soon. DC/WB has a chance to steal the cinematic show from Marvel, and they better not blow it but blowing their WAD so quickly!

  • WTF

How old are you??? Seriously??? “Earthers”??? What??? Written by humans…yeah…and so is this…WTF??? Get OUT of your mom's basement.

  • Actlete

If you close the space between them, the circle patterns form part of the lantern. Which makes the fact that the green transitions to yellow around Hammond pop even more. Wonder if that is important storywise, or just an artistic choice for the teaser.

Jumping to conclusions. Pre-judging. Get out of YOUR parents basement (that was me assuming you live there. Did i cross the line like you did?).

I'm sick of Hal Jordan being portrayed as the 'greatest Green Lantern of all', SIMPLY BECAUSE HE'S HUMAN.

Its called ego-centricism. The ego extends to the family, to the group, to the country, to the religion.
