Casting Begins For Marvel’s Runaways

An open casting call has been announced for Runaways, the Marvel Studios adaptation set to begin filming in January.

Created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, Runaways centers on six kids who discover their parents are super-villains known as the Pride. Fleeing from their homes, the kids band together to learn about their inherited powers, defeat the Pride and make up for the evil committed by their parents.

The auditions website breaks down the descriptions for what appear to be the roles of Alex Wilder, Chase Stein, Nico Minoru, Gertrude Yorkes, Karolina Dean and Molly Hayes — the original six Runaways:

The Disney Film Auditions blog notes that while the website says “Small Faces,” it is indeed for Runaways; casting directors originally wanted to keep the call discreet.

Runaways will be directed by Peter Sollett (Nick And Nora’s Infinite Playlist) from a script by Drew Pearce (No Heroics) and Vaughan. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will serve as executive producer.

Countdown to Internet backlash because they did not specify an Asian Actress for the obvious Nico Minoru character……. 10… 9… 8… 7… 6… 5…

  • Ghostplanet

    YES!!!

  • demoncat_4

talk about fast . seems they just announced they were going to Run aways and now they are doing casting. Marvel and Disney seem to move fast for these things.

  • http://twitter.com/tomdaylight tomdaylight

Exactly what I was thinking. Very disappointing, especially given they've specified for Alex to be black.

  • Ekfsjf

I wonder how much of a chance a nobody really has. I've only acted about twice in my life.

  • Personamanx

Honestly I was being semisarcastic. People are gonna flip because it did not specify Asian. It's not like it specified Caucasian or anything. It just leaves casting open, I would prefer Nico portrayed by an Asian actress but all in just give it to the best actress for the role regardless of race.

  • Kipling Carnevale

I was at 5 sites and Racebending.com is all up in arms about that.
what “upsets” me is that there is no way of knowing if chase and the others will be white. but I guess no one really cares about that.

    (parentheses means sarcasm)

  • Uh huh

The Runaways movie was announced over a year ago … before the merger with Disney … please do your research first.

  • Haxed

…One things that struck first about Nico was that she was an asian that wasn't a femme fatale or martial artist / hand-to-hand fighter…*sigh*

  • gwangung

In the business, 999 times out of 1000, when it doesn't specify a race, casting directors think “white.”

Yes. That's dumb. There are an awful lot of dumb people out there. I'm afraid they need help.

Must have figured Brenda Song's gotten too old for teen parts. (Beware of barbed comments).

  • http://twitter.com/OhYAComics Oh YA! Comics

Yeah, the fact that Alex is the only one whose race is mentioned a) makes me worried about Nico, and b) unfortunately reveals that in Hollywood, white is the default.

  • http://twitter.com/jayson77 jayson77

that's because the “default” assumption for actors includes “white” being implied, just like American=white, unless so specified in the mainstream mindset. unfortunate, but true. That Alex, the leader *spoiler alert* turn BAD GUY is specifically African American and the others are 1) left open or 2) default “white” with the exception of Nico (who may end up being renamed) is “uniquely beautiful”, while Karolina is “conventionally beautiful” (what's is that anyways?).. seems pretty suspicious

  • Obsaxman

But they would have to do something with that hair

  • Hanni

Brenda Song is only 21. That isn't ''OLD'' and she still looks 16.

Your comment made me laugh so hard.

Everyone who plays teenagers in TVs and movies is over 21. Take a look at Gossip Girl, Spider Man 1, Hulk etc.

  • Hayiey

they are looking for nobodies, thats why they had this discreet casting..im sending in one for the black kid

  • Light_em_up

they should've said that the actress for nico should be asian. and i will hate them if they change nico's name. if they want to make it look good they shouldn't stray from the comic cause the comic is awsome. if they f#@% up runaways i will seriously hurt someone who helped f it up.

  • grad

hey did you submit your audition video yet? don't have to be a member of ActorCast.com and pay your way?

  • Firesoul19

*crosses fingers that they just keep the characters and their ethnicities true to the original source material this time*

  • Riderstein

Noah Gray-Cabey has got to play Alex. Perfect age, hair, and his resume is impeccable.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WOPVO7OBOEXHWQKF2XUK7HRBLA Hello its me
