<i>Avengers</i> Movie Will Have Deleted Scenes That Won’t Even Be Shot

Joss Whedon is having so much fun writing The Avengers for Marvel that he’s writing scenes that he knows have no place in the movie. Can anyone say “merchandising bonanza”?

Whedon admitted to the Sydney Morning Herald that he’s writing far more material than necessary for the Marvel Studios movie:

Right now I’m working on a movie that’s got enormous stipulations and is going to be changing and fluid every second. I’ve come up with dozens of scenes and lines and exchanges and monologues that I adore that are not going to be in it. But while I’m writing them they feed me, excite me and they ultimately inform the character. It all goes in.

If someone at Marvel’s publishing division doesn’t read that quote and think that an “Unseen Scenes” tie-in comic with a big-name artist (Say, Bryan Hitch) illustrating Whedon’s unmade material would be a good idea, then someone at Marvel needs to think again.

Yes, another Avengers title that doesn't tie into any continuity that sounds like it will be comprised of a mish-mash of scenes and ideas that couldn't make the cut elsewhere. They can charge $4.99 for it too. Someone give me a job at Marvel Marketing!

Wow Jeff. Someone woke up on the wrong side of their mom's basement.
I think that, given his success with team titles (Astonishing X-Men), Whedon could be really fantastic on an Avenger's title. I'm not sure how well he'll pull off the movie, but a comic he could definitely do.

Whedon is perfect for job; however, I hope Marvel keeps him completely focused on the project. His creativity and talent tend to falter and fall apart whenever he's spread too thin. It is apparent with BtVS seasons 6 & 7 because he was dabbing in Angel, Firefly, the BtVS animation, and Reaper. The latter two, which by the way, never got beyond development.

Why do you got to insult the guy for his harmless opinion? Oh wait, because it's the internet! Sorry, forgot.

  • Drfunkphd

It's really not even an opinion. All he did was take the oppurtunity to complain about pricing and too many Avengers titles. It's all well and good if he doesn't like the idea, but to already start complaining about things that he assumes are still going to be valid in 2012 is absolutely ridiculous.

I'll admit, I'm skeptical of Whedon's skills as a director to pull this off. He's a proven writer (judging from his quote above, he's very, uh, self aware of that fact), but I wonder why Marvel chose him to direct as well.

  • Jeff

Just because you don't agree with it doesn't make my opinion not valid. The $4.99 price tag and Marvel marketing team was a bit of a joke (my condolences to your sense of humor), but the article and idea behind it speaks directly to the heart of my issue with A-list superhero oversaturation in the current market climate.

Do I think things will be different in 2012? Honestly I don't know. I don't think anyone can really tell what the comic market will be like in a few years. However, I can tell by looking at current trends (see: Batman & Thor related titles in November's solicitations) that the overpricing and oversaturation of A-list comic characters doesn't seem to be slowing in the next few months (which is as good as it gets for telling the future of the comics industry).

To break it down to it's most basic form, my opinion is really more of a question of whether or not we really need to devote the creative resources to another Avengers comic which (guessing from the movie plot) just rehashes their origin as a team.. again. I'd be just as uninterested if DC decided to put the table scraps from the Green Lantern script into a comic form and add another GL spin off to the shelves.

I guess I'd much rather see the writing and artistic talent being used on titles that shake things up rather than just continue the status quo. If Whedon could dramatically re-imagine the Avengers by somehow using the bits of his script that didn't make the cut, maybe I'd be interested. But I guess we'll have to wait and see on this as it's all wild speculation anyway.

Hope my posting now stands up to the critical standards of internet user Drfunkphd. ;)

I love Whedon's Astonishing X-Men and I would love to read an Avengers comic written by him- and why not have John Cassaday on art? The wait between issues would be hell, but the end result would be worth it.
However, it's not news that movie scripts are written and rewritten again and again before production (and, according to reports from the Iron Man sets, writing can continue during production). Scenes are written in and out for everything- that doesn't mean they should be the basis of a spin-off project.

He's a pretty solid director- I'd say he and JJ Abrams are the best directors to come out of television production in recent years (although, if I were to rank the two, I'd put JJ Abrams 1st). Whedon only has Serenity under his belt, as a film director, but he has experience with writing for ensembles, giving everyone a chance to shine.
As far as why he was chosen by Marvel? He worked with Marvel before, he has the experience with a large cast, but I would say another reason is he's probably relatively affordable, and Marvel Studios seems to do whatever it can to save money on its movies.

The panel featuring the Avengers has got to be the worst drawing I've ever seen of the original members. Backpack Shield Cap + Beard Thor + Anime Iron Man + Bug Eyes Ant Man + Spice Girls Wasp = MARVEL DUN GOOFED.

  • Not Harrison Ford

This is a very ambitious project, I know he is a geek icon but Marvel really should have given this project to someone with more experience.

I think the main thing you are missing Jeff is that the article does not seem to be promoting the idea of another Avengers series (and if you think there are too many Avengers series out now I'm sure we will have twice as many or more around the time the movie is released) but a comic book version of the deleted scenes section on a DVD.

Yes, Thor looks like a bum who's just been woken up from a park bench.

if they are not going to be in it and he knows they have no place in the movie (obviously they have SOME place in the movie…right??? they are just not essential to the overall plot) its probably like on the 28 Days Later DVD where they advertised that the movie had three different endings… of course ONE of those endings never even got filmed and it was shown on the DVD in its storyboard phase… they do this a lot with the Dreamworks and Pixar films when they have rough animatics or storyboards that were discarded early in the script process and never got into the final animators pipeline. (they call these scenes “dying on the vine” because they were cut out early in the process and didnt live long enough to get to final edit.

yeahhh. back in the day. early 2000's I believe. I have most of the run in which that art appears from.
