Weekend Box Office: Where’s Avatar?

It was a weekend where both Scott Pilgrim and Piranha 3D disappeared from the top 10, but there’s an even more surprising omission: No Avatar: Special Edition?

Surprisingly, to me at least, the added footage, raised costs and hype of the James Cameron re-release weren’t enough to get the movie above twelfth place at this weekend’s box office; it still made $3.8 million, but nonetheless – I don’t think I was the only one expecting it to do better (Piranha dropped 60% to take 11th place, if you’re curious). Here’s the top 10:

1. The Last Exorcism
Weekend/Cume $21.3M

2. Takers
Weekend/Cume $20.3M

3. The Expendables
Weekend $9.5M, Cume $82M

4. Eat Pray Love
Weekend $6.8M, Cume $60.5M

5. The Other Guys
Weekend $6.2M, Cume $98.9M

6. Vampires Suck
Weekend $5.3M, Cume $27.9M

7. Inception
Weekend $5.1M, Cume $270.7M

8. Nanny McPhee Returns
Weekend $4.7M, Cume $17M

9. The Switch
Weekend $4.6M, Cume $16.4M

10. Lottery Ticket
Weekend $4M, Cume $17.4M

Makes sense to me. The lions' share of the public isn't going to pay theater prices for what's basically a movie they've already seen, and less than a year ago at that. Especially when this new cut will inevitably be available on DVD and Blu-Ray. This new version was strictly for the die-hards, and it turns out they're a pretty small proportion of the people who went to see it first time around.

Just how many theaters did they release it in, anyway? None of the theaters in my area have it.
