Watch The Trailer For All-Star Superman

MTV’s Splash Page has the trailer for All-Star Superman, the animated adaptation of the acclaimed DC Comics series by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.

The direct-to-DVD release from Warner Bros. Animation is written by Dwayne McDuffie — he calls the original “one of the greatest stories in comic book history” — and features a voice cast that includes James Denton (Desperate Housewives) as Superman, Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) as Lois Lane, Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace) as Lex Luthor, and Ed Asner (Up) as Perry White.

Part of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line, All-Star Superman is produced by Bruce Timm and directed by Sam Liu (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths). It’s set for release in spring 2011.

garbage cast. they should've gotten Tim Daly and and Clancy Brown, classic voices for a classic comic.

really disappointed with the cast. and the animation should've been more closer to Quitely's art.

They made Supes/Bats Apocalypse look just like Turner's Pencils.

    i like it!

I'm down with this. These guys can do no wrong in my eyes.

I just threw up a little in my mouth.

  • Anxy

    Okay, well, I'm salivating now.

I don't know… seems dark. All Star was so upbeat and fun, and that's what made it so Superman. His perspective is so great when faced with any danger even his own mortality. I'll definitely be looking for clips as they're released so that I can see if this is just the bias of the trailer or the actual tone of the film.

Well, it is a story about how Luthor essentially succeeds in doing away with Superman, and he does sacrifice his life at the end, isn't that dark??

  • Deuorld

Very worried, with the trailer. It seems that it wil not include a lot of thw side stories, like Zibarro´s world, or the Supermen from the future…..
    Hope im wrong.

  • DrSmileX

it looks like they adapted the first 2 issues, and then the last 3 issues. Maybe the story of Clark Kent visiting Lex Luthor in prison (with Parasite) will be included, but in a 70 or so minute animated movie, I wouldn't count on much more than that.

  • Superdude

It looks kinda like it won't show the optimistic and fantastical sense of silver age goodness that the original comics had. I hope the next trailers will show the more touching and hopeful moments from the comics.

  • Nipo

Come on, make a DVD version of Neal Adams' Classic Batman: Joker's 5-way Revenge!

  • DocMange

Not necessarily, it's a matter of tone. The way the story is told comes from a very hopeful and inspiring place. This is a story about triumph, Luthor's, juxtaposed against Superman's… and clearly Superman's. Superman's is clearly the victor and example. Nobility and good humor elevate it from the grim hero fights a losing battle place to a different place. I would characterize it, in tone, as the opposite of Dark Knight Returns.

Sorry to ramble… but appreciate the discussion.

  • burnitin

why does the soundtrack rip off of The Dark Knight's?

  • Mr_Wayne

Exactly. Morrison even said that this project was uninspired by works like “Watchmen”. Reading between the lines I'm guessing he meant darker toned books etc.

Extremely low quality character design and animation. How far they've fallen since the Bruce Timm characters of the 90's. This is just cheap junk.

I get what you are saying. It is the 'silver agey-ness' of the work that elevates it over the inherent darkness of the subject matter/plot, and credit to G-Mo and Quitely for that. I was looking at it and how it appears that some of the more uplifting chapters like the time travel, Kryptonian astronauts, and Zibarro planet are likely to be deleted due to time, and how I would look at the work if those chapters were never there, and without them, it seems a little darker.
But it is just a trailer, so who knows what will be included in the finished product

Looks good to me! Good cast! I realize current fans consider Tim Daly, Kevin Conroy, and Clancy Brown “classic” voices of the DCU luminaries, but James Denton, Christina Hendricks, Anthony LaPaglia, and Ed Asner make up a cast to crow, not crab, about.

I am very worried (I hate to jump on the bandwagon) Dwayne McDuffie is a good writer and all, so I'm hoping that this trailer is meant to be action heavy to sucker in a more mainstream audience (Since if they followed the story closely those were all scenes from the end of the series). I am not going to take off points for Animation, since Quietly's style wouldn't translate to Animation. But I'm with everyone else, the voice acting seemed very sub par. I will still wait and see.

    SOLD

  • Madcattv2

Is that supposed to be based on Frank Quitely's art?

I think if I want to visit this story again, I'll just re-read the books and get the full story.

  • JTMaxwell

for a first look, it looks pretty damn sweet. i hope they manage to catch as much of the playful and mad energy/tone of the book and not JUST focus on the “Superman's dying” plot. that really felt like more of the catalyst for the action rather than its driving force. but i love the cast and the animation looks awesome (yeah, it could stand to be a little more like Frank Quitely…but everything could. ;) ). i'm in.

  • MAD de la Rosa

I was also worried that they wouldn't get all the other sides of the story. Not just for sake of “adaptation” (which ultimately has to cut some things) but because a lot of the proper tone of the work springs from those other moments and not necessarily from the “Superman is about to die and Luthor did it! Now look at some fights” thing. Others explained this better already above.

That said, I can point out four things:

    1. This is a trailer, which means it's probably out of the animators' and writers' hands (at least insofar the animation is done and ready to be shown). And yeah, it's probably designed to elicit the “cool, action n' 'splosions n' stuff!!” reaction (witness the familiar Dark Knight music cue).
    2. The Timm-produced DCU Animated Movies have been fine so far. Some just okay, some quite good, but none have been terrible. Knowing McDuffie is behind this one is a good sign, too (him and Timm were the main brains behind Justice League).
    3. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the quick cut at 0:30 is from the Smallville part of the story with the Supermen from other eras. So I have good hopes that at least that part of the story will be included. And come on, you think they're going to pass on the opportunity to animate the Bizarro World stuff? Thinking about it, f I had to cut anything, I would cut the Jimmy Olsen thing. Not because it's bad, but the story can probably do without it.
    4. Quitely's art would indeed be downright impossible to translate faithfully to animation. However, except for a few glitches here and there (I think I saw Luthor go off-model a couple of times there), the models seem right on target: they actually look like the sleeker cartoon counterparts of Quitely's art (look at Lois looking through the door during the Superwoman scene , Luthor escaping, and Superman lifting the hammer).

  • Scott Mcarthur

    not great vocals…

i can only hope for the appearance of Regan the goth girl. that 1 page really locked me into why Superman is Super.

  • Ozymandas

The animation is nice but doesn't really fit the project. It should either look more like Quitely's or resemble the old Max Fleisher cartoons, imho.
