What Do You Want To See Less Of On TV?

If there’s one thing that this week’s season premieres taught me, it’s that I’m sick and tired of shows being meta. But what other trends are popping up a little too much? What should we beg for a ban on?

Maybe I’m just overly sensitive, but I couldn’t help but notice that both Chuck and Community had moments of “This isn’t a TV show – It’s real life!” during their season premieres this week that… well, just annoyed, because they were so self-consciously unrealistic. It made me think that there’s a lot of odd repetition so far in this year’s television: Both Bones and Castle had the lead couples meet up awkwardly after some time apart, and between the aforementioned Chuck, the just-finished Covert Affairs and the brand new Undercovers, any itch I’ve had for “spying is just like real life, honest!” metaphors has been scratched away entirely. But enough about me: what kind of television familiarity could you do with less of? Spill all in the comments below.

They could try to get us emotionally invested in a show through *gasp* good writing and good acting, or is that too radical for Hollywood?

Agree. Fringe is the best show on network TV right now, without a doubt.

Reality shows – Live your own life, not someone elses

Crime shows – One or two are fine, but CSI/Law and Order/NCIS have too many shows and I heard Criminal Minds is getting another show. DUMB.

And hate me if this upsets anyone, but if The Event is going to be exactly like Lost, save us the trouble of missing an episode and never catching back up and cancel it.

I find most Tv shows these days to be well-written and acted. I just want two things:

    1) More likeable protagonists, neither jerks nor idiots. I stopped watching House and Bones because no matter how good the episode, I was always left feeling like I wanted to strangle the protagonists.

    2) No more close-ups on dead bodies on CSI shows. Seriously, is gore a selling point now? Save on the Fx and just tell us what you found on the body.

I'm just glad Covert Affairs is over. What a terrible show that turned out to be. Undercovers is much better. And Chuck is just awesome.

So far the only thing I'm sick of on TV are ideas that are worth about 2 hours of screen time trying to be stretched into an entire series. The Event, Running Wilde, Lone Star…
