Breaking: Zack Snyder To Direct Superman Reboot For WB

Watchmen director Zack Snyder has been selected to helm the Christopher Nolan-produced Superman reboot for Warner Bros., Deadline reports.

Snyder’s name was on a short list of contenders that was said to include Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), Duncan Jones (Moon), Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles), Matt Reeves (Let Me In) and Tony Scott (The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3).

Deadline’s Mike Fleming calls Snyder “an inspired choice” for the franchise relaunch. David S. Goyer is writing the script, based on a story by Goyer and Christopher Nolan, who will produce with Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder. Legendary Pictures’ Thomas Tull will executive produce.

“I can’t say why they came to me other than the fact that they know I have a fondness for the character and a real desire to understand him and present him to a new audience,” Snyder tells Hero Complex. “The challenge is huge but you know with Chris and Emma and Debbie I have a lot of people I can rely on. And Chris and David have given this the shape with a great story. It is a hard character to crack.”

Targeted for a holiday 2012 release, the movie — it may or may not be called Superman: Man of Steel — has become a priority for Warner Bros., which must begin production by 2011 or risk opening the door for the heirs of Jerry Siegel to bring action over the lack of a rights-reversion clause in the studio’s deal with DC Comics.

Although script details have so far been kept under wraps, Heat Vision suggests that General Zod could be the villain.

I am conflicted about this…I have faith in Mr. Nolan, but I also think Mr. Snyder is a crappy director. Let's see how the rest of the project develops.

Oh well, two years to make up my mind!

It'd sure as hell look good.

The great thing about this news is sooner or later we’ll hear about casting for the film. Personally I believe Snyder can pace a film and I don’t care what people think Snyder can definitely cast a film also. All casting decisions on “300” and “Watchmen” were inspired.

Also get prepared for him to save the Superman’s uniform as well.

Put the bottle down, please. You've had enough for tonight. Hand over the keys.

I agree wth you Mr. M. In Nolan I trust, but Snyder not so much… Hell, it can't be any worse than “Stalkerman Returns” was.

I'm also disappointed in hearing Zod will be the big bad. That, unfortunately, sounds like yet another rehash of Donner's work. I was really hoping we'd get a movie with Brainiac, in some form.

We'll see what happens… I'm sure everyone's got an opinion on who should play Supes. I think Jon Hamm would perfect, which probably means it'll be someone else.

I am hoping Heat Vision is wrong. Luthor and Zod have been done to death, it's time to try something different. Bring on Brainiac!

Don't get too excited about Zod being the villain. The operative words in the article being “suggests” and “could” that doesn't mean that Zod “will” be the villain. A lot can change between now and the film's release.

I hope for new vilains because, i think that Darkseid or Doomsday can make interesting vilain for a big movie.
