Star Trek Sequel Has No Wrath For Khan
When the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot charts a course for theaters in the summer of 2012, don’t expect the wrath of Khan. A new report suggests that the fan favorite villain will not be revisited for the new franchise; instead, a different established bad guy will terrorize the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.
Badass Digest has the scoop, citing an unnamed Paramount Pictures insider as saying that Khan will not be the villain of Star Trek 2. But the sequel will nonetheless revisit a character from the early days of Star Trek: The Original Series, one that old school fans will assuredly recognize.
Says the insider:
It’s definitely a character that will make fans of TOS excited. Think along the lines of Harry Mudd or Trelane or Gary Mitchell or the Talosians or the Horta. Actually it’s one of those that I named.
Badass Digest has a rundown of the villains for those of you who aren’t die-hard Trekkers — or is it Trekkies? Perhaps you can tell that I’m neither. Of the group, BD considers Mitchell — an old friend of Kirk’s who becomes corrupted with godlike abilities — the front runner. Based on the who’s who, Mitchell does seem like a likely candidate, though I could see the gig going to Harry Mudd — and, subsequently, Josh Holloway. After all, Holloway has officially crossed over to film with Mission Impossible IV, so why not give him a chance at turning a kitschy bad guy into something a little more threatening?
Alright, so maybe I just love Sawyer and want to see him get more work. Forgive my bias and weigh in for yourself — of the listed candidates, who do you think the next Star Trek bad guy is going to be?
