Star Trek Sequel Has No Wrath For Khan

When the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot charts a course for theaters in the summer of 2012, don’t expect the wrath of Khan. A new report suggests that the fan favorite villain will not be revisited for the new franchise; instead, a different established bad guy will terrorize the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Badass Digest has the scoop, citing an unnamed Paramount Pictures insider as saying that Khan will not be the villain of Star Trek 2. But the sequel will nonetheless revisit a character from the early days of Star Trek: The Original Series, one that old school fans will assuredly recognize.

Says the insider:

It’s definitely a character that will make fans of TOS excited. Think along the lines of Harry Mudd or Trelane or Gary Mitchell or the Talosians or the Horta. Actually it’s one of those that I named.

Badass Digest has a rundown of the villains for those of you who aren’t die-hard Trekkers — or is it Trekkies? Perhaps you can tell that I’m neither. Of the group, BD considers Mitchell — an old friend of Kirk’s who becomes corrupted with godlike abilities — the front runner. Based on the who’s who, Mitchell does seem like a likely candidate, though I could see the gig going to Harry Mudd — and, subsequently, Josh Holloway. After all, Holloway has officially crossed over to film with Mission Impossible IV, so why not give him a chance at turning a kitschy bad guy into something a little more threatening?

Alright, so maybe I just love Sawyer and want to see him get more work. Forgive my bias and weigh in for yourself — of the listed candidates, who do you think the next Star Trek bad guy is going to be?

I vote for Harry Mudd, but it might be a little too cheesy. Maybe a combo of Mudd and Mitchell. Oh man, my propeller top beanie is spinning now.

Bring on Commander Kor (“Errand of Mercy”)
The FIRST Klingon ever on Trek!
As portrayed by John Colicos, he was the evil equal of Kirk.
Give him an interesting aide or two, and you’ll have a match-up of characters that could carry several sequels!

Only if they cast James Callis as Kor.

I Really REALLY hope it’s Gary Mitchell! Kirk’s friend turned villain is from one of the greatest Star Trek episodes ever — “Where No Man Has Gone Before”

Good… Dont mess with that Khan Classic.

  • Brikarart

How about Gary Seven as the cosmic meddler he was in the 60’s?

  • James J. Reaves III

please, not Trelane. Futurama did that much better.

Wow. Never heard of any of these characters. Does that make me neither a Trekkie OR a Trekker …?

I think this “rumor” is either complete B.S. or dropped out there by the studio to get a measure of what fans would like to see. To be honest, NONE of these villians sound plausible in a 21st century film. I expect a Klingon heavy like Kang or Kor, or yes.. even Khan still. Of the ones listed, the only one that could work is Gary Mitchell — because an internal Starfleet officer being the heavy could mean a LOT of possibilities for Chris Pine and showing us more of Starfleet. Perhaps Gary stealing a ship a la ‘Wrath of Khan’?

Yeah, that’s for the best. We already had a great Wrath of Khan. Star Trek has other great villians. It’s the concept that I worry about. Is it simply Kirk versus someone or what else is going on. This is Star Trek, it’s also about brave new worlds and seeking out new life and a whole bunch of other things that can happen. THe mysteries of the Universe.

There was already a remake of Wrath of Khan (and a crappy one at that) – Star Trek Nemesis
