UPDATE: "The Flash" Hasn't Cast Savitar, Says Berlanti
TV, Comic Books
Yes, it’s actually happening. First hinted at earlier this month, Top Gun 2 is absolutely in development, as director Tony Scott himself has confirmed to multiple outlets that he’ll get back into the cockpit for another ride off the flight deck.
The director said he’s already launching into work on the Top Gun sequel, despite the fact that there isn’t a completed script yet. Scott also said that the world that Top Gun inhabits has changed dramatically since the original film, which is one of the main reasons he’s so interested in a sequel.
“It’s a whole different world now,” Scott told HitFix. “These computer geeks — these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night.”
Scott isn’t the only one returning, as Tom Cruise, who famously played leading man Maverick in the first Top Gun, is said to have a smaller part in the developing sequel. But that’s not entirely accurate, either; according to screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, Maverick doesn’t have a co-starring role — he has the lead part, instead.
“There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role,” the screenwriter tells Vulture.
So, what do you think? Now that it’s officially happening — or, at least, Scott says it is — are you excited for a Top Gun sequel, or do you think it’s unnecessary?
