Top Gun Sequel Sets Director & Star

Yes, it’s actually happening. First hinted at earlier this month, Top Gun 2 is absolutely in development, as director Tony Scott himself has confirmed to multiple outlets that he’ll get back into the cockpit for another ride off the flight deck.

The director said he’s already launching into work on the Top Gun sequel, despite the fact that there isn’t a completed script yet. Scott also said that the world that Top Gun inhabits has changed dramatically since the original film, which is one of the main reasons he’s so interested in a sequel.

“It’s a whole different world now,” Scott told HitFix. “These computer geeks — these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night.”

Scott isn’t the only one returning, as Tom Cruise, who famously played leading man Maverick in the first Top Gun, is said to have a smaller part in the developing sequel. But that’s not entirely accurate, either; according to screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, Maverick doesn’t have a co-starring role — he has the lead part, instead.

“There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role,” the screenwriter tells Vulture.

So, what do you think? Now that it’s officially happening — or, at least, Scott says it is — are you excited for a Top Gun sequel, or do you think it’s unnecessary?

With Scott and Cruise on board, so am I.

They don’t say that Cruise will play Maverick, just that the story revolves around the character.

Cruise is not officially attached to this.

If they do something lame like give Cruise a small part I will lose interest. Despite all the backlash against him I’d prefer him being the star over a smaller part. Wonder how they will do the music this time out. I’d hope for an 80’s type theme with someone like the Black Eyed Peas. Something fun. I’m sure they can get Val Kilmer back as well. Can’t have Top Gun without Ice! How about Goose’s ghost? (kidding on the last part).

OMG OMG bad bad very bad move …. for god sake who the heck is taking decision at Hollywood ? can’t believe how many blatantly obvious bad idea have been greenlit . A prequel to the Thing , some super hero movie that are downright silly ,
There are so many things that make top gun and can’t be done anymore
80’s brash reaganism is dead . No more Soviet Union either. Tom cruise has gone from hot young star to weirdo/bad rep people .The actress who used to play the part of the love interest is a wreck and a proclaimed lesbian. And Val kilmer ….. Gosh…. the guy is completely out of shape . Iceman is fatman and even if he loses some weight , he won’t get his hair back or his looks . And the music , how can you forget what part played the music : danger zone , take my breath away, ….It’s 80’s romanticism . wake up guys : It’s a great movie but a 80’s movie! it’s like highlander ! it’s a distaster each and everytime they try to make another of those sequels because they can’t put anything in music that compare to Queen, they can’t have Connery anymore and the story was closed at the end .
There is an idealistic approach full of energy that only makes sense in the 80’s . Let classics rest in peace : they don’t need sequel , prequel, remake and all those shit .
