AMC To Decide Fate Of Struggling, Stellar Rubicon In Next Few Weeks

We could learn the fates of Will Travers, Truxton Spangler and the American Policy Institute within the next two to three weeks, according to AMC.

In a wide-ranging article at The Daily Beast tied to the Sunday premiere of The Walking, AMC President and General Manager Charlie Collier concedes the network has yet to make a decision about renewing Rubicon, the slow-boiling conspiracy thriller centered around an intelligence analyst at a national think tank.

The series’ August premiere attracted 2 million viewers, making it the most-watched debut of an AMC original series. But the low-key drama, praised for its acting and atmosphere but sometimes criticized for its glacial pace and lack of answers, had difficulty maintaining an audience from week to week. (The season finale drew slightly more than 1 million viewers.) However, that doesn’t mean we should write Rubicon‘s obituary — or send it a four-leaf clover — quite yet.

“We nurture projects like no one else,” Collier tells The Daily Beast. “Season 1 has been a great success. I think it is a remarkable piece of television. Our job is to make sure we can continue to scale and fit it all in.”

Aww damn, I really hope this series comes back for a second season, if only to tie up the dangling loose ends of the first season.

I heard really good things about it from people that watched the whole season, but I couldn’t hold on after the first two episodes. I watched the premiere about 3 times and still thought I missed something.
For me, “glacial pace” is close, but doesn’t entirely describe how slow the show seemed to move.

Perhaps this is a show that will benefit from the “watch it all in a single sitting on DVD” approach to viewing. If that’s the case, maybe good DVD sales could be enough to ensure a second season.

As someone who truly hopes for the second and many more seasons of Rubicon, I would feel reassured by Collier’s comment, if only I had some concept of what he means by “continue to scale and fit it all in.”

After AMC destroyed “The Prisoner” (at least for me), I’m not big on their ‘original’ offerings. I did give the first three episodes of ‘Rubicon’ a shot, though (I love a good conspiracy story), but it just didn’t hold my attention. It was too slow and I could care less about the characters. If AMC pulls the plug it will be a mercy killing.

    Glacial pace doesnt covering it.

So you’re not watching Breaking Bad or Mad Men, because you didn’t like their Prisoner adaptation?

I actually think Breaking Bad is a decent show and I’ve watched a few episodes. The only thing is, it’s interesting but not -that- interesting enough for me to keep up with. While Mad Men may be a great show (I’ve never really heard a bad review of it), again, it’s nothing that’s grabbing my attention.

I stuck with it the entire season and loved it. It had the kind of slow burn that brings to mind the conspiracy movies of the 70′s or even more recently the excellent Michael Clayton. It was a wonderful change of pace for anyone that does not fit into that Mtv crowd of 3 second attention spans. PLEASE BRING IT BACK!

    We want season 2!!!

I really wanted to like it the plot and themes sounded fascinating but it was way way too slow and boring and i never got the feeling that the main character was all that smart.

Also it seemed stuck in a retro time warp where there was no cell phones or computers or internet .
