The Biggest Superhero Films That Didn't Happen, Part 2
Comic Books, Film
Disney has released the one-sheet and official synopsis for Mars Needs Moms!, the 3-D animated film based on the 2007 children’s book by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Berkeley Breathed.
Directed by Simon Wells (The Prince of Egypt), it will be the last project from producer Robert Zemeckis’ ImageMovers Digital, the studio behind The Polar Express, Monster House and A Christmas Carol. Like those movies, Mars Needs Moms! will employ the performance-capture process.
Breathed, creator of the acclaimed Bloom County comic strip, was inspired by a disagreement between his son Milo and his wife to write a story about a 9-year-old boy who learns how much he needs his mother after she’s abducted by Martians. “It’s both a love letter and a mission statement to all mothers … and parents in general,” the author wrote. “And a message to all of our kids who doubt, in the midst of their wrathful fits, that we wouldn’t die for them. We would. It still shocks me.”
The movie stars Seth Green, Dan Fogler, Elisabeth Harnois, Mindy Sterling, Kevin Cahoon and Joan Cusack. Here’s the official synopsis:
Take out the trash, eat your broccoli—who needs moms, anyway? Nine-year-old Milo (Seth Green) finds out just how much he needs his mom (Joan Cusack) when she’s nabbed by Martians who plan to steal her mom-ness for their own young. Produced by the team behind “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” and “The Polar Express,” “Mars Needs Moms” showcases Milo’s quest to save his mom—a wild adventure in Disney Digital 3D™ and IMAX® 3D that involves stowing away on a spaceship, navigating an elaborate, multi-level planet and taking on the alien nation and their leader (Mindy Sterling). With the help of a tech-savvy, underground earthman named Gribble (Dan Fogler) and a rebel Martian girl called Ki (Elisabeth Harnois), Milo just might find his way back to his mom—in more ways than one.
Mars Needs Moms! opens on March 11, 2011.
