Fantastic Four Made Jessica Alba Want To Quit Acting

It’s that time of year for giving thanks and appreciating your loved ones, but there sure is a lot of hate going on in the moviemaking scene. Case in point: some recent comments from Jessica Alba and Mark Wahlberg.

To begin with, Alba is not a fan of director Tim Story or Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Speaking with Elle Magazine (via Cinematical), the actress recalled that her experience shooting the Fantastic Four sequel nearly led her to quit acting altogether.

During a scene where her character Sue Storm is supposed to be crying, Alba remembers that Story criticized: “‘It looks too real. It looks too painful. Can you be prettier when you cry? Cry pretty, Jessica.’ He was like, ‘Don’t do that thing with your face. Just make it flat. We can CGI the tears in.’ And I’m like, But there’s no connection to a human being. And then it all got me thinking: Am I not good enough? Are my instincts and my emotions not good enough? Do people hate them so much that they don’t want me to be a person? Am I not allowed to be a person in my work? And so I just said, ‘F-ck it. I don’t care about this business anymore.’”

Alba had a whole lot more to say on the subject of working in film, including some choice bits about how first time directors are responsible for her worst movies and how great actors don’t need to pay attention to scripts: “Good actors never use the script unless it’s amazing writing. All the good actors I’ve worked with, they all say whatever they want to say.”

In another, similar corner, Mark Wahlberg is finally saying what many moviegoers have been hoping to hear for years: he did not like The Happening. During a press conference for The Fighter, the Oscar nominated actor spoke about the first time he met co-star Amy Adams, who he was originally supposed to star in another movie with — a movie he was initially reluctant to name.

We had actually had the luxury of having lunch before to talk about another movie and it was a bad movie that I did. She dodged the bullet. And then I was still able to … I don’t want to tell you what movie … alright “The Happening.” Fuck it. It is what it is. Fucking trees, man. The plants. Fuck it. You can’t blame me for not wanting to try to play a science teacher. At least I wasn’t playing a cop or a crook.

Seriously, can M. Night Shyamalan just not catch a break in this town?

Hmm…I thought she had quit acting BEFORE she did Fantastic Four…

Jessica Alba’s acting makes me want to quit watching movies

How many times have actors said they don’t need writers? And how many times have those actors found themselves with less work? Jessica, you’re being ridiculous.

Just pretend to care what she says, cause you wanna have sex with her.

Best acting she’s ever done: Get beaten to a pulp in the Killer Inside Me. Seriously I felt sorry for her, the only time I have ever felt anything but annoyance at her half assed work.

I have actually avoided seeing movies because she’s in them. I doubt I’ll ever see Machete after that abominable moment in the trailer where she utters what could have been, in any decent actress’s hands a hilarious line “We didn’t cross the border, the border crossed us!” she sounded like she saying “I’m acting! I’m acting MAD HERE! Therefore I WILL YELL!” totally deadpan, no inflection, no sense of irony, not a sense of anything.

Ironically, watching Jessica Alba in Fantastic Four made me want to quit watching movies…

Don’t care much for Alba’s acting, but I agree with her about Tim Story. What a hack.

Also, thank you Mark for admitting that The Happening was the most ignorant plot ever put to film.

I actually felt sorry for the actors in “The Happening.” It could have actually been a really good movie except for the killer tree nonsense. No explanation at all would have been a vast improvement over the tree nonsense. Don’t believe me? Go watch “The Birds” by Alfred Hitchcock. The film never even hints at why all the birds go homicidal, it ends with the main characters sneaking away in a car with no reason to think the phenomenon won’t follow them, and no reason to believe it won’t spread to the rest of the world. Wouldn’t it have sucked if Rod Taylor had figured out for no reason in the last twenty minutes that it was because of toxic waste or some rubbish like that.

Waaa….Jessica said she didn’t like this movie comic fans never talk about liking in the first place! Let’s all call her a bad actor!

Pfft, whatever. I don’t blame her–Rise of the Silver Surfer made me want to quit seeing movies too.

  • Desert Rose

Why are you’ll mocking Jessica? Oh, I see… Witty comic book nerds.

Is Alba a great actress? Maybe no, but she has all the right to complain about her director. Sounds like he was a real douche towards her. He was the one responsible for that failure of a movie.

Ok, you can continue your “OMG Jessica’s acting made me want to quit watching movies” jokes. So clever… NOT. Next time, pay more attention to the point here: this director’s misogyny and lack of respect.

Casting a mulatto as aryan icy blonde sue storm was retarded in any case.

  • kalorama

Whatever you think of Alba as an actress, if what she claims Story said is accurate and true, then he’s a bit of a numbskull.

(Although I have to admit, I don’t recall a crying scene in FF2.)

    I liked The Happening.

  • RunnerX13

And what are Alba’s “good movies”? And by that I mean a movie where she was the lead. I honestly can’t think of any.
