Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Charts Course For Sequels

Captain Jack Sparrow is about to sail the seven seas in an all-new Pirates adventure, but could the forthcoming fourth film in Disney’s adventure franchise lead the way to an additional set of sequels?

Hit Fix reports that Disney is already preparing for a back-to-back shoot on fifth and sixth installments of the Pirates of the Caribbean series, saying: “Disney has begun quietly telling cast and crew to set aside a major block of time in the very near future so they can shoot Pirates 5 and Pirates 6. And, yes, once again, they will be shooting them back-to-back as one giant film, and then they’ll release them as two films.”

I’m definitely not opposed to seeing more Pirates movies, especially if Disney is able to bring Johnny Depp back for them. Still, while the back-to-back shooting of Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End was a commercial success, it wasn’t necessarily a creative one — fans and critics alike weren’t anywhere near as wild about those films as they were about the initial Jack Sparrow tale. Is it too risky to try the same formula on a second trilogy of Pirates movies? Disney doesn’t think so, apparently, and at the end of the day, it’s their investment.

I think it was more the story that fell flat, if they focus on what made the first one good, mainly Johnny Depp acting like a drunken vaguely effete pirate, amid craziness that isn’t that overtly grotesque it might work. I like grotesque, but it’s not at all what I wanted from Pirates of the Caribbean, I wanted light action comedy with a dash of weird, not a whole hell of a lot of weird and no humor. And I don’t remember ANY eunuch jokes in the second one, I haven’t even been able to sit through the third, it went from dirty to dark and dingy to ‘that’s just gross’.

Here’s hoping the fourth is more like the first and the fifth and sixth follow suit. It could work, I love the character and think the comedic and action possibilities are pretty obvious. They just took the wrong tact with the second and third flicks.

One off movies. No “trilogies” or such. Different set of supporting characters for each film if they do a 5th and 6th. Focus MUST remain on Depp. I’d also like to see one movie with no supernatural elements.

There was indeed a eunuch joke in the second one. When Jack yells “Ball snippy-snippy” to get the cannibals to eat Will or whatever. He also does a scissor motion at Will at one point, probably around the same place.
