ABC’s Fables TV Show Is “Probably Dead” Says Creator

For those waiting for the rumored ABC television adaptation of Vertigo comic Fables… you may want to stop holding your breath. According to writer Bill Willingham, the show is “probably dead.”

Talking to io9 about the comic’s 100th issue, Willingham said,

Through rumors of rumors of mistellings of legends, I understand that the new DC regime was very much interested in getting Fables going [as a television series]. The TV show that was prematurely announced is probably dead — don’t hold me to that, because I don’t know. Hopefully, I’ll know before it airs, but I’m kind of out of the loop.

A shame, but it’s good to know that the powers that be at DC want the show to happen. Maybe on another network, if we all click our heels together three times and wish really hard…?

What probably killed this at ABC is Disney’s ownership of Marvel. Which also owns ABC.

too bad it may be dead . i was looking forward to seeing how they were going to bring Fables to life. though given how Disney now owns Marvel think they would proably not want the competion on one of their networks like Abc now.

I was surprised that Disney/ABC ever had any interest in a show where “their” princesses are sexually active, including Snow WHite sleeping with the Big Bad Wolf.

With the success of Walking Dead I bet there are other networks that may like a crack at it though.

I would love this on F/X or AMC or HBO.

ABC/Disney is too repressed. FX is too bombastic. Fox needs to up their production value. NBC is too unsure what to do with its shows and scheduling. AMC does great character work, but they aren’t as comfortable with special effects or levity. Syfy could do it, but they’re cheap and don’t want to shell out too much cash for quality fx (though since BSG they’ve needed a big hit worse than crack head). Fables wouldn’t fit into USA’s TV formula, and they couldn’t film it in Florida like all their other shows.

Which leaves HBO (who’re more willing to invest in miniseries these days), or Showtime (who might not be large enough quite yet to be up to the challenge.

Honestly, I’m hoping for HBO. But we’ll have to see how well Game of Thrones does.

Good. Now get it to a good cable network like HBO or AMC.

This needs to be on HBO or Showtime to be effective.
