Iron Man 3 Is An Avengers Sequel, Says Jon Favreau

The Avengers has raised more than a few eyebrows for its ambitious high concept: taking the stars of Marvel Studios’ biggest franchises and placing them all within the same movie. In essence, it’s a sequel to Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America, but the fun doesn’t end there — because according to Jon Favreau, Iron Man 3 is a sequel to The Avengers.

“In theory, ‘Iron Man 3′ is going to be a sequel or continuation of ‘Thor,’ ‘Hulk,’ ‘Captain America’ and ‘Avengers,’” the filmmaker told MTV News in a recent interview. Because he hasn’t seen a script for The Avengers and has only talked with the other Marvel filmmakers in passing, Favreau said he couldn’t even hazard a guess as to where Tony Stark will be when the time comes for a third Iron Man film.

“This whole world… I have no idea what it is,” he said of the Marvel cinematic universe. “I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys.”

Favreau also offered some insight into the Marvel Studios creative process: “The script is one thing, but when you actually see what you land on at the editing room — especially with Marvel where they film, cut, film some more and shape the film — you really learn as you go.”

figured Marvel would want to try and keep their film universe like their comic one. a tight one. though the wait for iron man three is a real long long one to find out how they will pull off a third iron man film.

It’s probably not a good thing if 3-5 films into this “universe” they don’t know what it looks like or what the “rules” are….

Who will introduce The Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Sub-mariner and Toro?

Because Sony/Fox has been so aggressive in its attempts to absorb as much of the Marvel Universe as it can (ex. X-men: First Class), Marvel has no choice but to attempt to create as many new fronts as it can to keep presenting its characters under the Marvel/Disney banner. Iron man first presented recent incarnations of Capt. America, Thor, Black Widow, Nick Fury and now Hulk. The Avengers will present at least Hawkeye but lost out on the Beast.

The big question is who will be the first to introduce characters which are supposed Mutant and Avengers characters even if they were not X-men.

  • Continuity Blows

Marvel Studios is only a few films old and it’s already bogged down with continuity. Nice job.

Thats not what they’re saying at all. They’re saying that Thor, Captain America, and the Avengers havent been released yet, so Favreau doesn’t know what Ironman 3 will be about yet…
