Maybe The Kree And Skrulls Aren’t The Avengers Villains After All

A reference in a New Mexico newspaper to the alien Kree and Skrulls as the antagonists in The Avengers was the result of a research error by the reporter, Marvel Studios says.

The Albuquerque Journal article, which centered on Marvel’s decision to shoot in New Mexico, mentioned that the movie’s story involves Earth’s Mightiest Heroes battling “two alien races, the Skrulls and the Kree.” It’s a phrase that sent movie bloggers everywhere scrambling to pass along the first (seemingly) solid clues to the identity of the central villains in the Joss Whedon-directed movie.

However, a Marvel spokesperson tells that the information was not officially released through the studio, and chalked it up to a research error. Of course, that’s not necessarily the same as Marvel saying the Kree and Skrull aren’t in The Avengers; it’s just that the newspaper’s information didn’t come from the studio. So … there you have it.

The Avengers, which stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle and Clark Gregg, begins filming in April. It opens on May 4, 2012.

    Well, uhm, OK.

I think having the Kree and Skrull in the new film is going to make it WAAAY too busy. It’s already going to be overcrowded with plots, why introduce TWO new alien races to add to the mix? They really need to have just a single villain to make things at least somewhat simple.

Though I have to say, the more I learn about this film, the more worried I get. Expectations are so high and rightly so since this is pretty much the ONE shot the Avengers will get if it bombs. I don’t care for some of the casting and the whole thing just seems like it’s far too big and unwieldy (to quote Rorschach) to really succeed.

    Staying tuned, though…
