Spider-Man Set Pics Reveal Denis Leary As George Stacy

Sony did a smart thing, releasing that first publicity shot of Andrew Garfield decked out in his hero duds from director Marc Webb’s reboot of Spider-Man this past week. With production underway, the spies are out in full force. A pic of Garfield in his tights would have come out sooner or later, so bravo to Sony for ensuring the world’s first look went out on their terms.

Getting back to those spies, they have been busy. You’ve already gotten a glimpse of Andrew Garfield in his Peter Parker guise hanging with his sweetheart Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone. Now we’ve got a look at Stacy dad George, who is played by Rescue Me (and The Ref!) star Denis Leary.

Leary’s Stacy seems to be modeled, at least in part, after the Ultimate universe version of Gwen’s father, though in that line his first name is John. It is a younger Stacy however, as compared to the older, grey-haired Stacy seen in The Amazing Spider-Man. Will Leary’s take on the character play to his comic strengths and hew closer to the Ultimate version, who is no friend to Spidey? Or will he be a fan of the wall-crawler, as George is in Amazing?

No way to predict. In both lines, Stacy eventually dies in the crossfire at the hands of a super-villain, Doctor Octopus in Amazing and Chameleon in Ultimate. Neither of those baddies is reported to have a place in Webb’s movie, which is a good hint that this Stacy is going to be doing his own thing… and given that it’s Leary, probably his own, bitingly sarcastic and generally unfriendly thing.

Doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing another villain snuck in alongside Rhys Ifans’ Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard. Check out the rest of the Leary set photos right here at the Daily Blam.

The Ultimate version of Gwen’s dad was not killed by the Chameleon. He was killed by a common criminal who dressed as Spider-Man. The Ultimate Chameleon only just debuted last year.

it was retconned that it was actually the chameleon, disguised as spidey.

This one looks more promising every day! Hope it’s faithful to the Stan Lee & STEVE DITKO comic series.

This is correct, just like the original Ultimate Eddie Brock disappeared and was retconned as a teenager, the original ultimate Chameleon was an impostor Spidey.
