A Close-Up Look At Spider-Man’s Full Costume, Complete With Mask

Following days of blurry photos from the Los Angeles set of Spider-Man, MTV’s Splash Page has the first clear, close-up look at the wall-crawler’s full costume, including his mask and those shiny metal discs.

Before anyone gets too excited, or upset, note that what we’re seeing is likely a slightly less-detailed version of the costume designed for stunt shots (much like the photo that emerged in September from the set of Captain America: The First Avenger).

Swing by Splash Page to see details of the mask, gloves and web-shooters.

The Marc Webb-directed reboot of the Sony franchise stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Campbell Scott, C. Thomas Howell, Julianne Nicholson and Annie Parisse. The film, which began production last month, will be released on July 3, 2012.

It looks like he has spidey slip ons. I still dont agree with a 27 yr old playing a high school Peter Parker, but to deviate from a costume to make it more high-tech is not going to be received well.

Intriguing. I don’t hate it but i don’t love it. I like the design of the original movie cuz it looked like the original comic but it was to buff and the raised texture and all made it unrealistic. This is a very unique take, has a lot of the same features just more stylized. I’m curious to see where it goes and how it looks in action

Holy f***… that’s ugly as all hell! What, is he going to run out of that shot and jump onto a BMX bike for the X-Games? Everyone can complain about the last trilogy’s silver webbing but at least it was true to the Spidey costume unlike this gross looking thing.

Oh my goodness. The best thing I can say about this image is that it looks kind of Spidey 2099-ish. I’d rather not get into the worst things I can say…

I’m quite certain that there will be a lot of CG enhancements and sweeting in post. Plus, most likely, we’re not going to see — at least with this costume — full body shots. I’m sure in the end it’ll look fine, but these photos likely shot from 100 meters or more away don’t tell the full picture.

Why do they even need to reboot the Spider-Man franchise so soon, the Tobey Maguire films were just perfect, and the last one was released in 2007. They should be making a sequel to the last film, and not rebooting it with Andrew Garfield a…nd Emma Stone. This film will bomb at the box office, and will NOT claim the success as the original Tobey Maguire films, so why they wasting their time and money? These studios seem they have nothing better to do. This film might as well go straight to DVD/Blu-Ray, because I doubt it will make much money.See More

BMX? X-Games? Also, several sites have run articles against the whole “Everyone can complain about the last trilogy’s silver webbing but at least it was true to the Spidey costume unlike this gross looking thing.” by showing how there have been several costumes similar to this one.

Wasn’t Maguire in his thirties when he did the final Spider-Man movie of the trilogy? I could be wrong, but he definitely wasn’t high-school age Peter Parker as we saw in that first film.

The costume holds up well considering it’s a long distance shot of a stunt sequence. Everyone bitching and moaning about the changes to the suit seem to be forgetting the numerous and ongoing Spidey costume changes over the years- it’s part and parcel of the character (like Iron Man). He hasn’t always looked like the Ditko version established in the sixities – there’s no reason why we can’t have a different version of the suit for this film. I’m sure over this trilogy the suit will gradually devolve into the original suit anyway. It makes sense if they want to distinguish it from the previous trilogy and you can’t help but think, “that’s Spider-Man,” so it works.
In the end we all know that this film will rake in the cash, that everyone posting “fail” will see it two or three times and buy the Blu-Ray disc 3 months after release. That’s a no-brainer. I won’t be surprised if this film is even better than Raimi’s OK, but flawed trilogy (I never could get past all the over-the-top sentimental monologues from various characters and the “You fight Spidey, you fight all New Yawkers!!” crap).

Why reboot a 10 years old pretty good movie?

  • Diggz72

To be honest, I would have wanted a younger actor for the 2002 Spidey film, but Tobey managed to pull it off. I think the powers that be want to give us more insight into the Parker high school years, which is why they should have looked for a younger option, but only time will tell if they can work the webhead magic again.

So that Sony can keep the license

  • Oy The Brave

Looks like he is wearing slippers!!!

  • Penguin

If they’re even going to be in the actual scene that is. This was after all a less detailed stunt version of the suit (according to the article), so the shoes/slippers might just be like that so the stuntman can perform.
And besides, bat-nipples and bat-thongs are hard to compete with! :)

  • nancy

Spidey rocks the ballet slippers. Huh?

  • Cyberv

    Oh dear…

    That… That’s not good.

You just DON’T mess with a classic look, Sony. There’s a REASON why Spidey’s original costume is so iconic and enduring. That… That’s just hideous on every possible level.

  • MikeA.

Andrew Garfield is pretty great at playing younger parts. He looks teens but brings a touch of maturity to make him add a bit of substance to his storytelling. I had more trouble with Maguire b/c he looked even older bulked up. It was like the 90s 90210.

  • http://twitter.com/drunkjack00 Jack Derunk

WTF is this crap? That is the single worst redesign I’ve ever seen.

Hollywood, where design means overdoing everything and never stripping down. “Let’s give him a stripe down the arms and legs, and make it look like he’s wearing silver ballet slippers, and make those webs hard to see, and his eyes should be pink! It’ll be FABULOUS!”

  • Sugargl1der

From the looks of things, the fact that Sony will “have the license” to Spiderman is roughly the same as me “having a license” to fish. It doesn’t mean either one of us knows what the hell we are doing with it.

  • Edd13

come to think of it,this probably why its being leaked long before the film release.
time to get used to it

  • chayamorgan

For a second, I honestly thought it was an action figure. Fail on hollywood (and a little on myself).

  • Toni Goodman

Everyone crying about this is either a moron or not a fan of the comic books. Many are probably both. The costume changes all the time in the frelling comics, you dolts. As well, this is CLEARLY a stunt shot. Did you see the close up the the costume? If this costume is used in the film as such, it’s probably an early costume. The official shot of Garfield in the costume showed a clearly darker and more detailed version. I’m going to say that this costume is made for the stunt. Have you people heard of CGI? Clearly not, because you’re all whining like little girls.
