Three Actresses Up For Female Lead In Superman, But It Isn’t Lois

Following rumors earlier in the week that at least seven actresses, including Rachel McAdams, Mila Kunis and Olivia Wilde, are being considered for the female lead in the new Superman movie, a new list of contenders has emerged for the role — which apparently isn’t that of Lois Lane.

Variety reports that Alice Eve, Diane Kruger and Rosamund Pike are the finalists to star opposite Henry Cavill in director Zack Snyder’s reboot of the Warner Bros. franchise.

The trade paper is specific in saying that although the character’s identity hasn’t been disclosed, it’s not the tough-as-nails journalist, who’s been the Man of Steel’s primary love interest over the past seven decades. The news is reminiscent of the revelation in August that Gwen Stacy, not Mary Jane Watson, would be the object of Peter Parker’s affections in Sony’s Spider-Man reboot.

However, in the case of the Superman movie, Lois Lane looms so large in the Man of Steel’s history — in comics, radio, television and film — that it’s a little more difficult to imagine alternative female leads.

The most obvious choice may be childhood sweetheart Lana Lang, who played a central in Superman III and on Smallville. Beyond that, though, the options are slim. Mermaid Lori Lemaris? Highly unlikely. Daily Planet gossip columnist Cat Grant? Perhaps, as she was briefly romantically involved with Clark Kent in the comics (she’s blonde, too, like the three actresses). Smallville‘s Chloe Sullivan? Nah.

Eve, best known as the star of She’s Out of My League, at one point was in negotiations to play Emma Frost in X-Men: First Class — a role also linked to Die Another Day Bond girl Pike, who also appeared in Surrogates and An Education. Kruger, known more recently for Inglourious Basterds, is no stranger to big-budget blockbusters, having starred opposite Nicolas Cage in National Treasure franchise.

The Superman reboot, which is expected to begin filming in June, is written by David S. Goyer from a story by Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan. Charles Rovan, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder also are producing. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are executive producers. It’s set for a December 2012 release.

If Lois Lane isn’t in this movie there are gonna be some very upset people out there.

It could be Mercy Graves, Ursa of General Zod fame, Cat Grant… hell, it could be the Ultra-Humanite now that I think about it! But I love Diane Kruger’s work, especially Joyueax Noel, so no matter the role, I pick her.

  • Shaun Manning

Please let it be Lori Lemaris. I’d love to see the story they concoct around *that*.

Alternately, it would be fun to see the general public’s reaction to an adaptation of the “Superman and Big Barda do a porno” story arc.

To me the obvious answer is Supergirl!

  • Coryjameson

    Superwoman from the Anti-matter Universe.

  • mars

It would seem obvious but they are too old and from what we suspect its early in the Superman history.

It could be Lara but how much of a role can she really have, definitely not a lead

  • Balesirion

You know, I worked very hard to purge the memory of that story from my brain….

I guess they’re shooting for what they’re doing with Batman. Introduce an unknown romantic interest, kill her off, and replace her with one the fans know already.

    But… I want Lois Lane. :(
