Will Robin Rise Alongside Dark Knight?

Will Robin Rise Alongside Dark Knight?

You’d think with official news on the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises finally breaking — Tom Hardy as Bane and Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle — that the rumor mill would finally slow its roll. Of course, there’s no way that’s the case.

The Daily Blam! collected the latest on the upcoming film, director Christopher Nolan’s final contribution to Warner Bros.’ Batman universe. The rumors center around the possible appearance of Robin the Boy Wonder, something people used to throw around before the villains became the topic of conversation. But with the villains for the film now confirmed, why not bring the Robin rumor back out of the shadows?

Apparently this round of speculation began when Ain’t It Cool New found a telling quote on the website of Michigan NBC affiliate WILX:

According to Eaton County and Grand Ledge officials who didn’t want to be identified due to confidentiality agreements, production crews from “The Dark Knight Rises” scouted locations in Grand Ledge’s Fitzgerald Park last week.

They looked at the Ledges as well as a water treatment plant located inside the park. Sources say the area is being considered as a hideout for Batman sidekick Robin.

Add to that the Lansing State Journal, which reported that Grand Ledge City Manager Jon Bayless revealed an empty underground water-retention vault would be used by the production as “Robin’s office.” Bayless added that “someone had told him that is the producer’s intent.” So, basically, someone told him that someone told them it was “the producers’ intent” to use the water vault as Robin’s base of operations.

Finally, The Daily Blam! reached out the writer of WILX piece, Alex Goldsmith, who commented that:

“I heard from three sources, the only one who would go on camera being state Sen. Rick Jones. All three mentioned the water treatment facility being considered for “Robin’s Cave” specifically. I’m not as up on my Batman lore as others but I wasn’t aware that Robin got a cave. As this was just a scouting mission, I don’t have any details on actors or even confirmation as to what role he’ll play. I just know what my 3 sources told me. Granted the production team scouting could’ve given them “Robin’s Cave” as a red herring.”

So, what’s all this mean? Well, for one, like Goldsmith pointed out, the idea of the “Robin Cave” could easily have been misdirection: When locations were being scouted, Warner Bros. hadn’t announced Hardy as Bane, so “Robin Cave” could’ve been used to cover those tracks. Secondly, Robin never had a “Robin Cave,” at least nothing like it at that point in continuity. Nolan definitely seems to want to keep close to the source material of the comics, and giving Robin his own little base of operations just doesn’t gel well.

Finally, Nolan and star Christian Bale previously made comments about Robin and essentially killed that possibility. Nolan himself long ago said that, “This is a young Batman, so Robin’s a few films …. not for a few pictures anyway. Dick Grayson’s still in a crib somewhere. I seriously doubt I will even be involved when Robin’s in the franchise.” But even more than that, Bale outright refused to even do a movie with Robin, saying in a 2008 interview that, “If Robin crops up in one of the new Batman films, I’ll be chaining myself up somewhere and refusing to go to work.”

Then again, what of Joseph Gordon-Levitt? Long rumored to play the Riddler — before Nolan squashed those hopes — maybe we’ve been looking at the wrong end of the spectrum, and Gordon-Levitt looks to play a hero and not a villain. In all honestly, as little as I want a Robin in the Nolanverse of The Dark Knight, if Gordon-Levitt plays him, I’m all in.

    JGL as Detective Dick Grayson?

  • http://shorteasywordsreviews.blogspot.com/ Emmapants

I agree with that last statement. I think he may be the only actor who could actually make it work, sorry Chris O’Donnell.

  • Comic_writer_rod

“Will Robin Rise alongside Dark Knight?”…..God I hope not…

  • Hugo Strange

love JGL, but too old. It might actually be interesting to have the final scene of TDKR take place at the circus just after the Flying Graysons were murdered. Batman sees the young Grayson as a chance to save Dickie from the bad experiences he had…end of film.
Much better than a 1990s style Batman ending where there’s some combination of Batman, Catwoman, Robin or Batgirl running in slo-mo in front of the Batsignal.

So, you’re saying that we could get a JGL played Robin, and lose Christian Bale as Batman?

Here’s hoping. But, there’s so much in this film already, I rather see a cameo.

I’m all for JGL as Dick Grayson. I think that he has a young enough look that he could pull off playing a teenager. (Why not? Anne Hathaway still looks like a teenager and she’s playing a full grown adult) but don’t even ALLUDE to his future as Robin. It would be really interesting to see Bale’s Bruce Wayne have to be a supportive, concerned father figure to offer comfort to a kid who’s going through what Bruce himself had to go through. Might even offer both characters comfort and growth.

Anyone remember of “Dark Victory”? Have it happen at the very end and speed up the learning curve so that the end of the movie is Robin taking the oath. Run credits and then…

A few years later… We see the Dark Knight with a young partner but this Batman is not as bulky, more lean and he… smiles? More acrobatic than powerful… It’s a grown Dick Grayson and his Robin is Damian Wayne… New direction, keeps the franchise going, all well and good….

Didn’t Nolan say this will be his last Batman film? Based on that alone I hope he doesn’t leave any loose plot threads of “sequel opportunity” scenes. Anyway its Nolan so I’m sure I’ll be pleased with the final product.

Robin sucks! If he shows up in TDKR it’s gonna fail!

I could see it as a place homeless Jason Todd might stay (since Batman met him as some punk kid trying to steal rims off the batmobile). I agree that JGL might be pretty cool as Robin but it seems like too many characters to introduce. But that seems to be a common problem in the third movie of most series.

I’m a massive fan of Robin. In fact, he’s my favorite comic here EVER. But… I’m thinking this is just a red herring of sorts. Bale and Nolan were adamant about not including Robin because while he works for comics, a realistic movie franchise like this not so much.

One of the biggest problems I had with Robin in the Forever and B&R films was that he wasn’t a teenager. He looked over 20 years old. It never made any sense for Batman to take in an adult as his ‘ward’ or whatever. And considering how close Nolan stays with the mythology of Batman, I don’t see him doing such a drastic change as to making Dick Grayson an adult or a detective.

The only way I’d be okay with them introducing Robin in this film series is if he never appears in the film Robin. Since this is the last film of the Nolan franchise, Bruce meets that kid (and he has to be a kid, so it makes sense that he gets adopted by Bruce) at some point in the film, and takes an interest in him and maybe saves him in the manner he saved Rachel in previous movies or something.

At the end of the film, Bruce takes the boy in legally and agrees to train him like he was trained by Ra’s Al Ghul. Dick maybe already has the nickname “Robin” from his mother who called him that after he was born on the first day of Spring. The movie ends with the implication that one day Dick becomes a hero like Bruce, creating a sort of book end effect with the first film about becoming something greater. A legacy in the making.

BUT we don’t ever see him in costume or being a super-hero.

And with that, the franchise would end a high and hopeful note for the characters.

But considering how much Bale and Nolan say they don’t want to see Robin in the films in any manner…

That will be a cool end for the batman solo story (going to the circus and bringing Dick G to be part of Bruce’s life and show him the right path.)

  • demoncat_4

the robin cave could be just nolan trying to play coy and mean bat cave. though jgl could indeed be playing robin. since it would be a natural fit for batman to wind up with robin even on film. we just have to wait and see what Nolan has up his sleeve.

  • Rogers666

I could swear that Chris Rock was once rumoured to play Robin in one of the early sequels. Like Batman Returns I think. He was on SNL at the time and he wasn’t exactly the biggest cast member on the show.

‘Nolan likes to stick close to the source material’? Funny, I don’t really recall Batman agreeing or declaring he was going to take the blame for murders he didn’t commit in the books.

  • Dragonreborn1080

Nah, I heard he was supposed to play Jimmy olsen is Superman back when Nick Cage was gonna be Supes and Tim Burton was directing.

  • filmfan2000

Nolan could make Robin soar (or rise).

I’m afraid to get my hopes up given the fact this rumor has come and gone. But I think this is one of the best things that could happen to the franchise. This would change the tone of the film and guarantee a unique ending. If anyone could make a dynamic duo plausible and believable Nolan could.

Most of the things Nolan and Bale said occurred way before they even knew they would be back for a third film. In the Dark Knight, Nolan proved that Bruce was willing to take partners with his relationship with Harvey Dent. Since then Heath Ledger provided the “Nolan-verse” a much needed dose of dramatic credibility. Bale proved to be an excellent flawed mentor in the fighter. Nolan proved he could he could inspire young adventurers (Ellen Page and JPL) with Inception. And for the third film, Nolan decided to give Batman a villain who (in the comic) disabled him. All of these events build a nest (or cave) for Robin.

As for logistics, I have no idea other than I believe in Nolan to iron out all of the continuity problems. So what if Robin enters as an older teen or young adult. Reality wise, acrobat or not, I don’t know many 12 or 13 year olds who can physically challenge adult criminals. The appearance of Dick Grayson, pre-Robin would be enough for me. If anyone could erase the on going speculation that there was something “unspeakable” about the Dynamic duo’s relationship, Nolan could.

Nolan likes to throw red herrings.

Remember how Nolan made a huge deal out of crafting Gotham city then ”surprise” changed locales to China in the second film. Remember the images of Hardy appearing to be Hugo Strange some months ago. What better way to keep anyone from assuming Bane was the intended villain? If you thought Anne Hathaway’s casting was a surprise, thank Angelina Jolie.

If Angelina Jolie really wanted to be Selina Kyle, she never should have tried to force Nolan’s hand. Her media stunt of announcing her interest in the role before Nolan announced interest in the film guaranteed someone else would be hired for the film.

Months after the film has premiered, we’ll all forget Nolan’s misdirection games. My assumption is we will instead appreciate yet another innovative film from a remarkable director.

  • Nior_freespirit

To be honest its still just rumour and I doubt somewhat that Robin will be included as the films are set early in the Batman mythology. Plus you seem to be forgetting that JGL might have a cameo role the reports claim he will “appear“ in the film thats different from being involved actually in the film. I think he might be someone like Harvey Bullock or the new DA. Or if he is a villian maybe someone in the mob or a minor villian who comes early on in the beginning and is killed off early-midway through or someone who emerges in the climax- end of the film who gets away and is the villian for the newly “risen“ redeemed Batman to fight at the end. But thats just me :)

  • Acrid_Gunsmoke

    Dork.

  • Eightiesologist

I could see something where at the very end of the movie, in an epilogue, they show a scene with the Flying Graysons or something. A little nod to the end of Batman’s early years, and a way to hand off the baton to someone for the next arc.

Otherwise, there’s no way Robin as currently constituted fits into Nolan’s Batman. The costume alone just won’t work (and really would never work in any serious Batman film attempting to show crimefighters stealthily in the night). Maybe they just take the liberty and introduce him a little older and as Nightwing.

  • Tomfitz1

Gawd, I sure hope that Nolan doesn’t bring Robin into the DKR. That would be so wrong on so many levels.

  • 0bsessions

As dragonreborn mentions, that was Jimmy Olsen. There WERE alleged plans for a black Robin, though. As I recall, one of the Wayans brothers was allegedly going to be a very much reimagined Robin before Burton left the franchise.

  • spike

No, he won’t. That’s about all that needs to be said on this one.

  • Muthasucka

Marlon Wayans was cast as Robin in Batman Returns but the part was cut. But he was signed to play him and he got paid and gets residual checks, even though he never set foot on set. Good gig!

    http://io9.com/#!5330150/the-real-reason-marlon-wayans-passed-on-playing-robin

  • Max Ferris

Maybe he’s playing Brice’s childhood friend Tommy Elliot…

  • N’wing

They said there wouldn’t be a Robin, but what if Nolan skips that identity and has Batman meet or create a Nightwing instead!? JGL looks more Nightwing’s age than Robin’s anyway. Hope this Nightwing has an Oracle helping him…

  • Rogers666

I think you’re right. Chris Rock. Marlon Wayans. Jim Carrey. I get all these Living Color alumns confused.

  • Mjd903

    No to bane
