Detroit’s Mayor Says No To RoboCop Statue

Sad days for RoboCop fans. Even after Eminem’s heartfelt appeal for the love of Detroit during Sunday’s Super Bowl XLV, the order-restoring super-cop is getting no love from the real-world city’s government.

Mayor Dave Bing turned to the Internet for suggestions on repairing the fallen-on-hard-times city’s image, which apparently elicited the rather genius suggestion of erecting a statue to honor RoboCop, because Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 sci-fi classic was set there. The mayor tweeted back with a disheartening reply: “There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop. Thank you for the suggestion.”

Come on, your honor! RoboCop is a symbol of peace and order! The very sight of him strikes fear into the hearts of criminals! I say you shouldn’t just erect a statue, you should go full-bore and put up a monument that qualifies as the largest free-standing structure in the city! Who is going to loot some poor sap’s house when RoboCop is just standing there, off in the distance, surrounded by a ring of lights and watching your every move.

This is why you aren’t a mayor of a major United States city.

Since when is Detroit not a major US city?

??? It is. That’s why I said what I said to the author of the article.

As a Detroit native I think this would be interesting…I’m not sure it would be a perfect choice, but what ever. Oh by the way Detroit doesn’t have to be a major city to kick ass.

thats just stupid to have that in the city what does that even have to do with the city nothing

RoboCop was set in Detroit, I mean come on it says it right in the article. Anyway I think it would be cool. Philadelphia has the Rocky statue, why can’t Detroit have a RoboCop statue?

I would travel to dretroit, from Buenos Aires Argentina just to see the Robocop statue.

You know even though its corny, that would be really cool. The “Keep Austin Weird” type of thing really works for peoples out look on a city that has the potential to be otherwise bland. A robocop statue would definitely add to the intrigue of the city. It’s on expected, different, irrelavent, funny. I liked the commercial until eminem made such an appearance and broke the fourth wall. If the brand for the commercial was that detriot was legendary/hard working/above trendy….then getting a rapper (when all to often rappers are hawking stuff…shoes…dr. pepper…video games) to push your message is a bit trite. It took away from the epicness of the commercial IMO. But it is cool that eminem will back his city…and not say…take his talents to south beach.

Robocop doesn’t exactly paint Detroit in a good light. Besides, Robocop is set in a near-future version of the city, not real-world Detroit.

You didn’t make it clear who you were talking about.
