SDCC: Warner Bros. Film with "Suicide Squad," "Wonder Woman" and More
This one needs some backstory: Way back in 1985, Brigitte Nielsen introduced the movie-viewing world to Red Sonja, a red-headed warrior who went hand in hand with Conan the Barbarian, at least in comic books. Afterward, the chainmail bikini-clad heroine disappeared from movies while continuing in comics, such as those from Dynamite Entertainment.
A few years ago, word finally broke that director Robert Rodriguez was looking to produce a Red Sonja reboot, with his then-flame Rose McGowan set to star and Doug Aarinokoski to direct. It seemed like Sonja was ready to sink her sword into movie screens once again. And then … nothing. Red Sonja seemed to doomed to fall back in production hell.
Empire spoke with Conan the Barbarian producer Avi Lerner, who confirmed that not only is Red Sonja set to make her big-screen return between the first and second Conan films, but they also have Simon West (The Mechanic, Con Air) on board to direct. As for the who exactly would be slipping into the chainmail bikini, Lerner has his sights set on a certain blonde badass he worked with recently.
“We’re talking to a few girls for the role of Sonja,” he told Empire, “but we just finished a movie called Drive Angry with Amber Heard, and I want to see her. She’s my favorite for the role.
“Amber is the new Red Sonja … but she doesn’t know it yet!” he added.
So, great news for Red Sonja fans and even greater news for Amber Heard fans. I know I’m excited. How about you, readers?
