Feature-Length Cars Spinoff Planes Coming Direct To DVD

Pixar’s Cars 2 is almost upon us, hitting theaters at the end of June. We’ll be waiting considerably longer for Disney’s just-announced direct-to-video spinoff Planes, however, with a Blu-ray/DVD release now set for spring 2013.

“We had such a great time exploring the world of Cars over the course of two films, so it seemed only natural for us to see where our imaginations would take us in a film where planes were the main characters,” co-director John Lasseter said in a press release. “By expanding the Cars world, Planes gave us a whole new set of fun-filled situations and a great opportunity to introduce some fantastic new characters.”

Like the Cars 2 plotline, it sounds like Planes is built around a major race, only this time it will be set in mid-air. The star of the show is Dusty, a small-town flyer with dreams of being a top-flight (couldn’t resist) racing superstar and a pesky fear of heights to overcome. Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs is lending his voice to the character Siddeley for Cars 2, who happens to be a plane. Seems reasonable to expect that the character, if not the actor, will be showing up at some point in Planes.

So, like Toy Story 2 before it, will this end up being so good that it becomes a theatrical release?

Actually, I think this is them testing the waters with spin-offs and a secondary outlet. We all know every Pixar movie is cinema gold. They know that too. I really think this is going to be a D2D release, just to see how well it does.

Jason Isaacs has done television (notably, for me, he was Zhao in Avatar). I don’t see him having a problem doing this.

Something to note, that this won’t be a Pixar movie. As the picture shows, it’s from Disney Studios directly.

Mind you, this means really nothing. Cars is Lasseter’s personal baby, and he’s the guy in overall charge of Disney Animation, not to mention Cars is one of Disney’s biggest licensed properties, so the movie isn’t going to be cheaped out.

He had a reoccurring role on The West Wing, as well.

Really? Cool. I never watched that, though.
