Avengers Pulls Out Of Michigan

Marvel has decided not to shoot part of The Avengers in Michigan following a proposal by the governor that would essentially eliminate the state’s current film tax incentive, the Detroit Free Press reports.

The plan originally had been for the Joss Whedon-directed project to film primarily at Albuquerque Studios and at other locations around New Mexico before moving to Michigan and New York. But according to the newspaper, when Marvel was unable to confirm The Avengers would still qualify for incentives under Gov. Rick Snyder’s budget plan, the studio withdrew the movie from Michigan.

As part of a sweeping elimination of special tax credits and exemptions, Snyder plans to allocate $25 million a year for new-movie incentives, a dramatic reduction from the $60 million paid out last year. Incentive supporters fear The Avengers could be the first of many losses for a state that’s played host to 135 productions since 2008. During that period, filmmakers have spent nearly $650 million in Michigan.

The Avengers, which is set to begin filming in April, stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg. It opens on May 4, 2012.

Once more Michigan/Detroit led further into the mire by inept leadership.

More often than not a film production does not equate any real revenue for the local economy and actually in some cases of closing streets down interrupts business and peoples lives.

It can be a real pain.

No, Rick Snyder is an inept boob. One of the idiots who ran Gateway into the ground and then sold it to the Taiwanese

His plan? Cut business taxes, start taxing pensions, and cut education! Yeah, that’ll save everything! Voodoo always works!

The Michigan Film Industry was a complete joke to begin with. No one in Michigan ever got hired to work on any of these films. Hollywood would roll in with thier own people, do a quick shoot, then take off like a john after using a hooker.

    That’s life.

Hey, is this the old Avengers with Captain America, Vision, Thor, and Iron Man or is this the New Avengers with the twisted versions of those characters where everyone is not good nor bad. Because Marvel just wants to offer things in its Mark Millar hyped up Civil War Kick Ass fashion with very little plot?

Untrue. I’ve known plenty of friends from the Detroit and Flint areas who have found steady work over the past year on film productions that came into the state. The actual benefit to the local economy and the more permanent fixtures for a Michigan film industry are on the verge of being a reality, and now they’re being cut short. I know many who will lose jobs because of this and more than likely opt to move out of state.
