Vaughan & Chiang's "Paper Girls" Builds a Familiar Yet Disconcerting World
You haven’t missed the news about Powers, right? Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming’s comic book series was announced last year for a TV series and officially greenlit by FX on Friday. The story is set in a world of superheroes, following a pair of homicide detectives who are tasked with investigating apparent superhuman-related deaths. One of the cops, Christian Walker, is a former superhero who lost his powers, and the other, Deena Pilgrim, is trying to hide recently developed powers of her own.
It’s a great setup for a police procedural tinged with a bit of the fantastic, which is the direction Bendis has said things are heading in the TV series. One name you know is already pursuing the Pilgrim role: Katee Sackhoff, of Battlestar Galactica fame. She tweeted earlier in the week, before the series got it’s greenlight, “Already met on #powers last year! I love it! I’ve just been waiting for a green light to go after it!”
Coincidental timing, that tweet coming just before the go-ahead was given. Or perhaps she got a heads-up from someone involved in the series? Either way, Sackhoff would be a dynamite fit for the Pilgrim role and the series would be elevated by her presence. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed.
