Diane Lane Cast As Martha Kent In Zack Snyder’s Superman Reboot

While we await word on Jonathan Kent and, perhaps, General Zod, Warner Bros. has announced that Academy Award-nominated actress Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, “the only mother Clark Kent has ever known,” in the new Superman movie.

“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman,” director Zack Snyder said in a statement. “We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

Lane, whose long list of credits includes Unfaithful, Secretariat and Hollywoodland, joins star Henry Cavill in the still-untitled franchise reboot (the Warner Bros. press release only refers to “the new Superman movie”).

The role of Superman’s adoptive mother was portrayed in 1978’s Superman: The Movie by Phyllis Thaxter and in 2006’s Superman Returns by Eva Marie Saint.

The new movie is written by David S. Goyer from a story by Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan. Charles Rovan, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder also are producing. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are executive producers. Filming is expected to begin in June for a December 2012 release.

BURBANK, CA, March 2, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Oscar®-nominated actress Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, the only mother Clark Kent has ever known, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder.

Snyder stated, “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

Lane will star with Henry Cavill, who was recently announced as the new Clark Kent/Superman.

Lane earned an Academy Award® nomination for her performance in the 2002 drama “Unfaithful.” She most recently starred in the family hit “Secretariat.” She next stars in the HBO feature “Cinema Verite,” opposite Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini. Lane’s long list of film credits also includes “Nights in Rodanthe,” “Hollywoodland,” “Must Love Dogs,” “Under the Tuscan Sun,” “Perfect Storm,” “My Dog Skip,” “Chaplin,” “The Cotton Club” and “A Little Romance,” to name only a portion.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Slated for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

    Can’t argue with her chops.

Well, I mean, total idiots can (and that would include an uncomfortably large percentage of comic fans), but….

Never thought of Martha Kent as hot. But No doubt Diane Lane is hot.

  • kalorama

So, I guess in this version, Jonathan and Martha found Clark’s ship on their way home from junior prom.

(Yeah, I know it happens all the time in Hollywood–Mel Gibson/Glenn Close, Dustin Hoffmann/Anne Bancroft, Glenn Close/Robin Williams–and I don’t have a real problem with it; I just find it amusing.)

  • Jack Derunk

Diane Lane has been hot for nearly 30-goddam years.

Sounds good to me. Martha as MILF.

  • mickeylodeon

    One word… MILF!!!!!

  • BoyWonder

Damn, never realized how hot Ma Kent is supposed to be! ;)

  • Dawnell_do

    Damn, Ma Kent is hot!

So… uhmm… she found Kal when she was 18? Diane Lane’s only 46 and Henry Cavill is almost 28. Adopted or not, it seems a little odd that they’d play the Kents as having been teen parents. No complaints about Lane’s acting. I just think that they should’ve gone at least 5 or 10 years older.

  • Man-El

I guess she’ll be playing a 30 or 40 year old Martha Kent for the origin part and then use makeup/CGI to look older for the rest of the film.

  • Christinereed

Diane Lane is a good actress. (And, for those worried about her age, she’s played characters that are older than herself before.)

  • Eightiesologist

Should have cast her as Lois Lane instead and made this a different type of Superman movie. Superman goes to Metropolis and gets eaten up by the local Cougar. In this version of the film they could just make Lex Luthor an egomaniac obsessed with real estate! Oh wait…

  • The Anti-Bieber!

I swear the people making the she was 18 when she found Kal-El contingent….that’s the internet! LOL! Just messin’ with ya’! ;)

    It’s called movie make-up! Hahaha!

Yeah in Superman The Movie she and Jonathan were older as in the origin in the comics, but this isn’t that movie and won’t even connect, as Christopher Nolan said. They’re making their own set of movies as was done with Batman Begins. So in telling the younger days to present day of Clark (which like Batman Begins may be an hour into the movie that will probably clock in at 2 and a half hours, give or take) we’ll see younger Jonathan and Martha. They wouldn’t be the old man and woman in Superman The Movie or the original origin. They’ll probably look more akin to what they did in Superman Secret Origin and possibly Superman Earth One.

C’mon! They looked like grandparents in the original origin and in Superman The Movie. They would’ve been around their 80s and 90s when Clark left Smallville had they been transposed to the screen a bit more plausibly! Hahaha!

Think about the way Zack Snyder did younger and older Silk Specter in Watchmen with the beautiful actress Carla Gugino. I’m thinking that’s what they may go for with Martha Kent in this movie. I’m up for Diane Lane in this role.

This all looks very promising so far, getting really pumped about this movie.

  • Alex

Wow, I can’t think of her as a mom. Even though she probably is. Superman’s mom is not what I think about when I see Diane Lane. :)

  • 2000filmfan

With Costner, these are the youngest Kent’s in Supes feature film history.

This might be bad news for anyone who thought the reboot would resemble Smallville.

  • Tomandjeryy

Costner and Lane. FINALLY somebody does something right over there in Hollywood.
