"Marvel's Most Wanted" Co-Star Andrade Promises an "Unpredictable" Series
While we await word on Jonathan Kent and, perhaps, General Zod, Warner Bros. has announced that Academy Award-nominated actress Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, “the only mother Clark Kent has ever known,” in the new Superman movie.
“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman,” director Zack Snyder said in a statement. “We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”
Lane, whose long list of credits includes Unfaithful, Secretariat and Hollywoodland, joins star Henry Cavill in the still-untitled franchise reboot (the Warner Bros. press release only refers to “the new Superman movie”).
The role of Superman’s adoptive mother was portrayed in 1978’s Superman: The Movie by Phyllis Thaxter and in 2006’s Superman Returns by Eva Marie Saint.
The new movie is written by David S. Goyer from a story by Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan. Charles Rovan, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder also are producing. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are executive producers. Filming is expected to begin in June for a December 2012 release.
