J.K. Simmons Confirms He’ll Voice JJJ In Ultimate Spider-Man

Although J.K. Simmons won’t be reprising his role as J. Jonah Jameson in director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man, the veteran actor isn’t finished with the short-tempered newspaper editor just yet.

He confirms to ComingSoon that he’s providing the voice of the crusty character in Ultimate Spider-Man, the animated series set to debut this fall on Disney XD.

“Yeah, I just started doing that,” Simmons says. “I don’t know when the show’s gonna be out, but yeah, J.J.J. lives on in my career at least (laughs) for a while with the new cartoon show, yeah.”

Officially announced last April, Ultimate Spider-Man boasts an impressive creative team that includes Brian Michael Bendis, Paul Dini, Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly and Steven T. Seagle. The cartoon has its roots in the long-running Marvel comic series of the same name, launched in 2000 by Bendis and Mark Bagley.

In the interview, which focuses on Simmons’ new film The Music Never Stopped, the actor also discusses his disappointment upon learning he wouldn’t be returning to the big screen as Jameson, a part he played with gusto in director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.

“I was at Sam’s birthday party, and we were talking about story ideas for J.J.J., and then six weeks later, they pulled the rug out from under all of us,” he said. “So, yeah, I wish the new people all the best with it, but I sorta felt like those films were iconic, and Sam was such a great director for that — I’m finding myself using the word franchise, which I hate — but it was a big disappointment that we weren’t going to get to play again because those were just really, really fun.”

The character apparently doesn’t appear in The Amazing Spider-Man, but who knows, maybe there will be room for Jameson, and Simmons, in the sequel.

I thought he was the best part in all the three movies. Most spot on casting for the character. :)

I always envisioned J.J.J as older than him, but damnit, the feeling he gave to the character was all that was needed.

Simmons as Jameson was one of the highlights of Raimi’s Spider-man and one of the greatest casting choices in superhero films, on par with Christopher Reeve as Superman. I hope he returns to a live-action iteration of the character someday. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to hear him in USM.

He is a great actor (see: Juno) and will forever be JJJ in my book. Thats why hes not in the new Amazing movie, he is instantly recognized as a mainstay of the previous movies. It could potentially confise new moviegoers. Ult Spidey cartoon just got better with this news.

Simmons’ JJJ should be to Spider-Man what Dench’s M is to the James Bond franchise. He should jump from one iteration to the other.

If Judi Dench could be carried over into the “Bond” reboot as “M” even though it buggered their own continuity, there’s no reason Simmons can’t be carried over into the new films. I remember the Marvel Comics screening when Jameson’s face is hidden behind the newspaper and he growls, “Who is Spider-Man?” and then slams the paper down and snarls, “He’s a menace!” The place erupted. It was like JJJ had stepped right off the comics page.

It’s my understanding from certain lines of dialogue M has in the Brosnan and Craig movies that she is playing two different versions of the same character, not the same character.

In the Brosnan movies she calls Bond a relic of the Cold War, while in Quantum of Solace she says that she misses the Cold War (which would make her the kind of relic she mocked Bond of being in the previous continuity).

In essence, Simmons is already playing a different version of JJJ in the toon since it is based on the Ultimate continuity and not 616 like the Raimi movies, so there should be no reason why he couldn’t do the same and play him in the movie (which some reports/rumors said would also be based on the Ultimate continuity).

This is a good start, now all they need to do is keep Simmons on as JJJ in the new movies and all will be well.

Damn straight! If Sony is going to reboot the series so they don’t lose the movie license to Disney, they need to have Simmons as JJJ.

    Loving X-Factor btw!

This is fantastic… they could not have made a better choice. I agree with what PAD described; I’ve never seen a better interpretation of JJJ than JK’s.

Wow! Bendis, Dini, and now J.K. Simmons collaborating on an Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. This is actually exciting.

I just hope Jeff Loeb doesn’t fuck it up somehow….
