FX Cancels Boxing Drama Lights Out, Nears Renewal For Justified

FX has decided its boxing drama Lights Out, which premiered in January with 1.5 million viewers but never found its footing, won’t return for a second round.

“The audience didn’t want to watch a show about boxing,” network president John Landgraf tells Deadline. The final two episodes of the series, about a washed-up former heavyweight champion (Holt McCallany) fighting for a comeback, will air on March 29 and April 5.

While that show is down for the count, the website reports there’s good news for another under-appreciated FX drama: Network executives are close to renewing Justified for a third season, despite the low ratings for Wednesday’s episode. The critically acclaimed — and rightfully so! — neo-Western, about a no-nonsense U.S. marshal (Timothy Olyphant) who returns to his native Eastern Kentucky, is performing better than its first season and closing in on FX Sons of Anarchy.

“Lights Out” is awesome. Please do not cancel this show.

Too late, they already did. Same with Terriers. But don’t worry, FX will have some new shows to fill that void in the Fall. Probably serials, as well. Eventually, one of them will stick.

Once again, the tv public just don’t understand good TV. RIP Lights Out.

But yes to Justified! Favorite show right now.

Pretty cold if you ask me to ‘cancel’ with 2 eps left to air. We knew it was coming but the excuse of the FX Upfronts on Tuesday as the reason why the ‘early announcement’ is pretty lame. Then the push about Justified being renewed before the ink on the Lights Out Cancel pen is dry, gives me pause with my former opinion of John Landgraf. Yeah we’ll see the last 2 eps, ok and yeah I know business is business ($$$) but they handled this worse than Terriers and I’m out of FX as of April 5…Good Luck Oliver Stone, Connie Britton and all coming with pilots, hope for your sake viewers will have had their fill of Teen Moms and Pawn Stars by the time you come along…

You know, I read the entire thing, but I honestly don’t get what your point is. They canceled Light’s Out because it wasn’t performing well. They’re considering renewing Justified because it’s doing very well. And aren’t these kinds of announcements the entire POINT of the Upfronts? To say what shows will be returning and which ones won’t? I’m all for being peeved, but it’s not like they canceled it because it was bad. It wasn’t successful. You may not like it, but there’s no need to ride their ass about it.

Exactly how often do you do something that costs you more than it benefits you? They promoted the show and people did not watch it. It cost them cash to make it and they were not making it back via ad revenue. In this business, that generally means the show gets the axe. Get angry with the fact the public does not share the same tastes as you, because that is the only place where the blame actually lies

Just glad Justified made the cut. Already so much better this year than last. Can’t wait to see how season 2 ends, and how Season 3 goes.

Justified is good stuff and I’m glad to hear it’s probably getting another season. Sad to hear about Lights Out though, I was thinking about starting to watch that one. FX solved that problem for me.

Yeah, I caught one of the three minute rundowns the other day and found it pretty interesting. I actually thought to myself that this didn’t seem like something I’d watch, but I couldn’t pull myself away.

But, as a comic reader, I’m very well versed in coping with the loss of a great series.
