Amy Adams Cast As Lois Lane

Three-time Academy Award nominee Amy Adams has landed the role of Lois Lane in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot, Hero Complex reports. She joins a cast that so far includes Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel, Diane Lane as Martha Kent and Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent.

The 36-year-old actress, who’s appeared in such varied films as Enchanted, Doubt and The Fighter, beat out a list of contenders that at one point was thought to have included Kristen Stewart, Mila Kunis and Rachel McAdams.

“There was a big, giant search for Lois,” Snyder tells the Los Angeles Times. “For us it was a big thing and obviously a really important role. We did a lot of auditioning but we had this meeting with Amy Adams and after that I just felt she was perfect for it.”

The star reporter, and one side of the Lois-Clark-Superman love triangle, was last played on the big screen by Kate Bosworth in 2006’s Superman Returns. However, Margot Kidder, who portrayed the character in four films, and Noel Neill are, of course, closely associated with the role.

The new Superman movie is written by David S. Goyer from a story by Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan. Charles Rovan, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder also are producing. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are executive producers. Filming is expected to begin this summer for a December 2012 release.

She’s adorable, and knows how to act. Good choice.

  • Shaun

Not the casting I would’ve come up with, but I’m OK with this. She’s a good actress, often rising above the material she’s given. Also, just like Nolan’s Batman movies, it’s great to be able to say you have an Oscar winner in your cast.

  • Mike

Hmmmmmmmmm…I like! Looking forward to the final product on screen.

  • MW

I can’t stand Amy Adams, personally.

I was really rooting for Rachel McAdams, but man, I love Amy Adams too, so…yay.

I like my Lois Lane with spunk and she’s got plenty of it. This could be good.

  • Anonymous

My god, I never thought I’d see the day when so many people are in favour of a casting for such a role, lol. Anyway, she’s cool, this film is looking up.

  • Christopherbutson

She’s a great actress. I’m looking forward to this for sure!

  • Shift

I really like Amy Adams, but she always seems a bit too… sweet to play Lois. I mean, Lois has always been someone oozing attitude. But, who knows? I wasn’t sure about Heathe Ledger as Joker, but now he did a fantastic job. Lets hope for another one like that.

  • Invasionforce

Amy Adams is brilliant. She is able to go from “Enchanted” to “The Fighter.” Zac Snyder just needs a better script than the had with “Sucker Punch.”

Ugh. I’m so sick of seeing her in stuff. I even cringe when her Smallville episode comes on.

  • Supersheltie

And no mention of Erica Durance who, as Margot Kidder even stated on Erica’s portrayal of Lois, that she “knocked it out of the park…” and has been doing so for six years…

    Love Erica’s Lois….

  • Mario

By the time the sequels come around, she’ll be 40! Nice!

  • Oscar

One of the better actors out there. Gives me hope about the movie =)

  • http://nailsin.mysite.com nailsin

    I think she’ll be fine.
It is interesting though that there had been rumors that this
film would be set early in Superman’s career. I believe it was to
be set before he moves to Metropolis and characters like Lois
might not even be in it. But that’s rumors for you.

  • paulski

It’s certainly an unusual choice in my book, but I’m not unhappy to see it. Amy is a brilliant actress and I’m sure she can handle the character just fine. At the very least, she couldn’t be a worse Lois than Kate Bosworth. Now THAT was awful casting.

  • Anonymous

Yup, it’s a younger, hipper cast all around. But what worries me is the story- what is this new take they claim it will have? Perhaps a more personal look at how the man becomes the hero, ala Batman Begins? That could work.

  • Mario

Margot Kidder was 30 when they filmed Superman. Amy Adams? 36 (turning 37 in August). Jon Hamm? 40.

  • Jcorle00

Sweet. This film is shaping up nicely.

  • Scud

Jon Hamm? More like Henry Cavill.

  • GolemGeezer

As the captain of the Titanic said: “Iceberg? What iceberg?”

  • Matches Malone

Maybe they’re going for a take on Lois that doesn’t involve her being a jerk to Clark?

Also, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Ms. Adams get pissed off in at least 3-4 of her movies. She’ll be good. Definitely better than Kate Bosworth, who was just there.

Erica Durance makes a great Lois, but they’re referring to the movie series and the classic Superman series from the 50s.

This movie has some really great casting, now if only they would say who the mean villain gonna be.

  • http://profiles.google.com/wallyoeste Esteban Pedreros

Isn’t she way too old for the role?
I mean no disrespect, she is pretty, she can act, but she is 10 years older than the actor playing Superman… what if there is a sequel or 2? she’ll be in her forties playing Lois Lane.

In just ten years, actress Amy Adams has gone from a “Freak of the Week” to the woman who becomes Superman’s wife, Lois Lane. Nice upgrade.

  • Kelly

    Really?
What did she do to you?

  • Wagner Lacerda

She is too old. I always imagine Lois at early 30´s, not 36. Too old. Lois is BRUNETTE, hyperactive woman, not RED e OLD.

  • Philip

This is great news! Amy Adams is perfect!

A former Smallville “Freak of the Week” beats Erica Durance and wins the role of Smallville’s Lois Lane.

Cinderella story comes out of nowhere to win the whole thing.

Smallville fans were hoping that maybe Zack Synder would pick Tom Welling or Erica Durance to be picked for Clark and Lois. I wonder how the 2 of them feel about this. An unknown guest star from 10 years ago becomes a 3-time Oscar Nominee. Then, after their careers may end when the show is over in 2 months, she wins a role over Erica Durance in a moving that could have shot Tom Welling into an international superstar.

Now Tom Welling and Erica Durance are going to have an uphill battle getting great film roles. This was their chance.

I hope this reboot works out well! Good Luck reboot!

  • Fielding

I like Amy Adams, she’s cute and a good actress, but…..she’s too short and unsexy, and for me it’s just too soon for another actress to tackle Lois after Erica Durance’s superb portrayal. I won’t be seeing this and actually hope that it fails.

  • The Mighty Drew

I’m surprised people are concerned with her age. I thought the biggest problem with Kate Bosworth’s portrayal of the character was that she looked about 12 years old. Amy Adams is a great choice.

  • Philip

I definitely thought that Kate Bosworth looked too young. (Brandon Routh also looked a little young to be Superman). Although both Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder were about 30 in Superman the movie, both acted, sounded, and LOOKED about 40. Amy Adams looks like she’s in her late 20’s or early 30’s and she is a great actress.

  • Mario

Oh, that’s right. Jon Hamm was too old. 3 years older than Amy Adams…

  • Philip

Even though Margot Kidder was 30 in Superman she looked 40 and sounded 50. Amy Adams is definitely not too old. Kate Bosworth was in her 20’s and it isn’t believable that a person in their early 20’s would be the best reporter in Metropolis.

  • Philip

She isn’t too old. Tony Stark has been around for almost 50 years yet in Iron Man #500 it says he is only 35 years old. Robert Downey Jr. is 45 (46 in a week) and he plays Tony Stark better than anyone else on the planet could. Even if she’s older than the “ageless” character in the comic, she is better than someone who is too young.

  • Alaska1125

Please go rent The Fighter and see if you still holt the “too sweet” opinion.

  • Shift

I’ve seen the Fighter twice already. And I stand by my opinion. She did a great performance, but stilll… >Shrugs<

Like I said, we'll see how she does. I just don't want another Kate Bosworth who played the role too sweet, and not strong enough.

  • Zor-El of Argo.

Welling and Durance had no shot at this movie, at least not in the starring roles. This movie will not be in the “Smallville” continuity, to use Smallville’s stars would confuse fans of the show.

  • Hugo Sleestak

I think Reeve was 26 or so when he made the first film, which is just about right. Amy Adams is about eight years older than Caville (Kidder was older than Reeve by four years). That may be the only stumbling block. I think she’s beautiful and always looks younger than she actually is, so it may not be a problem at all. Bosworth was terribly miscast, and age was a huge factor. Kidder/Lois was 32 or so when Superman supposedly left earth after “Superman II,” but when Supes gets back to earth five years later in “Superman Returns,” Bosworth/Lois is only 23??? That was harder for me to believe than that a man could fly.
