Hawkeye Has A Role In Thor, Plus An Ultimates-Style Costume

The Ultimates #9, by Bryan Hitch

CinemaCon, the big meeting of the National Association of Theatre Owners, has made Las Vegas the hot spot this week for movie news as studios pitch their upcoming slates to the trade group’s members. And during its Marvel Studios presentation, Paramount Pictures revealed a couple of Avengers-related tidbits, both involving Hawkeye.

Confirming a rumor that dates as far back as November 2009, Cinema Blend reports that Thor footage screened at the convention shows Jeremy Renner, in arrow-firing action, in a scene with Clark Gregg’s S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson.

Meanwhile, Superhero Hype spotted concept art of Renner is a costume that, perhaps unsurprisingly, resembles the one designed by Bryan Hitch for The Ultimates: “In the concept art, we see Renner wearing similar dark glasses and a leather outfit with a matching over-the-shoulder leather quill for his arrows, only the movie version of Hawkeye has the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo emblazoned on it to show his government allegiances. His precision bow is much like the one used by archers who do it for sports and hunting …”

The report also mentions that the sizzle reel included Mark Ruffalo discussing the Hulk, “and how he’s definitely going to be a hero in this movie rather than being the catalyst that brings the group together.”

Thor, which stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins and Tom Hiddleston, opens on May 6. The Avengers, which stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, opens on May 4, 2012.

Ultimate Renner as early as May 4? Count me in!

The more they link these movies/characters together ahead of Avengers, the better Avengers will be.

and now we wait for the impending leak of pictures of said costume.

I was expecting something similar to the Ultimates Hawkeye outfit. As long as the cocky wiseass Hawkeye from the 616 verse comes through I’m fine with it. And the tricked out arrows too of course.

Oh God yes, it’s not like I needed any more reasons to see Thor on day one.

i thought renner is busy doing the 4th mission impossible?? when did they shoot this??

  • Shift

I keep thinking he’s going to end up looking like a red clad version of Green Arrow from Smallville.

I’m reading a whole bunch of Ultimate stuff now. I recently bought some of it and realized I really enjoy it. The Millar stuff is much more natural in the Ultimate lines opposed to that big crossover that was a disaster. They ruined the original Spider-man in such a bizarre fashion and made some of the Marvel characters really hard to define. Who is Tony Stark now? I didn’t buy that he was this government official that locked people up in the Negative Zone.

But I’m reading some Ultimate stuff recently and something clicked. Stuff happens. People die. I hope Spider-man DOESN’T die, because unlike the magically resurrected amnesiac bad Spider-man, Ultimate Spider-man seems like a decent individual. I think the line actually has a future, but may be cut short and I don’t want to see that.

I’d rather see the next series of Ultimate Thor or Ultimates than Mighty Thor (with the bland costume) and New Avengers. Hey, some of these books have the same writers, too. Ultimate Hawkeye’s costume makes sense. Maybe the Swordsman will show up.

Ehh…I understand why Marvel is emphasizing the Ultimate versions, I suppose. It’s “edgier” (in other words, heroes kill, die and have sex, and are often nearly as unlikeable as the villains) and people tend to want that now. But personally, I’ve waited a really long time to see some of these characters come to the big screen and to realize they won’t be patterned after the templates that I grew up with and loved is disappointing. Yes, I know, I’m old and I need to “get with it” and “stop whining” and all the other stuff that gets hurled at anyone who expresses frustration with projects, but there you have it.

Doesn’t mean I won’t watch it (if I don’t watch it it’ll be because of the Norton/Ruffalo Hulk mess) but I do feel a sense of loss when I read this kind of thing, really.

Well the thing is Spider-man is a guy who would rather see the Universe altered rather than live up to the consequences of his actions and see his Aunt May die. He cares more about his Aunt May than anyone. That’s a better shade of Norman Bates than a hero. Tony Stark locked people up in the Negative Zone and Reed Richards helped him by building a Thor robot. This is the regular 616 Universe. Sure, Marvel acts like they are the same good old heroes, but that was their big ‘universe changing event’ that they couldn’t get out on time and wasn’t believable. I like the old Marvel characters, too, but they don’t seem to be around anymore.

I hate Amazing Spider-man comics becuase all that stuff they put in there. They refused to give readers an story they put out there about everyone finding out who Spider-man was. Well, a few pages of Jonah being mad doesn’t cut it. I don’t care if they didn’t want him to be married anymore, they wasted this thing and it was awful. I can read Marvel stuff regular and Ultimate, but I’m finding the Ultimate stuff more interesting recently. Hey, and there’s a Spider-man there… for now.

If I’m not mistaken, only his costume is based on the Ultimates. His personality should still be 616 Clint. I don’t think anybody feels that Ultimates > Classic in terms of personality and characterization. But his classic costume wouldn’t work well at all on the big screen.
