BBC America’s Doctor Who Trailer Sports Different Tone, Footage

BBC America has debuted its own trailer for the sixth season of Doctor Who that’s not nearly as creepy, nor quite as epic, as the BBC version. However, it features a lot of new footage, including several glimpses of season-premiere guest star Mark Sheppard (Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica).

Doctor Who returns at 9 p.m. ET/PT April 23 with “The Impossible Astronaut,” in which the Doctor (Matt Smith) and his companions Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) receive a secret summons that takes them from the Utah desert to the Oval Office in 1969. The two-part season premiere, which continues the following week in “Day of the Moon,” marks the first time the sci-fi series has filmed on location in the United States. Alex Kingston also reprises her role as the enigmatic River Song.

Gotta dumb the show down for the American audiences

Wait what? You do realize we’ve been getting Doctor Who at pretty much the same time as you guys for a little while now, right? They’ve dumbed down nothing (especially since this was produced by the same people as series 5 and the Christmas special), they just cut a trailer that would be more appealing to an American viewer. The show won’t be changed at all.

Actually we haven’t. Torchwood and Doctor Who were both changed for US audiences. Really should take a look at the BBC versions and then a look at the US versions. A few minutes cut here, a kiss cut there, watching Dr. Who on BBC America alone (or the US versions released on DVD) and I would have stopped watching Dr. Who years ago.

I can see Torchwood being changed for broadcast here, but the disc releases were altered too? I’ve been watching the UK versions, but I figured there wasn’t a difference since they were aired on BBCA. And we’ve been getting Doctor Who at nearly the same time since series 5, the christmas special was the same day, and that trend will continue with series 6.
