WC11: Warner Bros. Animation Announces Justice League: Doom

Warner Bros. Animation will follow Green Lantern: Emerald Knights and Batman: Year One with an animated feature “loosely inspired” by the 2000 JLA story arc “Tower of Babel.”

Announced Friday at WonderCon in San Francisco by executive producer Bruce Timm, the tentatively titled Justice League: Doom is the last work of respected writer and producer Dwayne McDuffie, who passed away on Feb. 22.

Written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Howard Porter, Drew Geraci and others, “Tower of Babel” centers on the perceived betrayal of the Justice League by Batman, whose secret files detailing the weaknesses of his colleagues fall into the hands of Ra’s al Ghul. He uses the information to incapacitate the League while distracting Batman with the theft of the bodies of Thomas and Martha Wayne. The revelation that the Dark Knight had devises contingency plans to defeat each of his teammates naturally creates friction, leading the JLA to consider expelling him from their ranks.

Elements of “Tower of Babel” were incorporated into “Starcrossed,” the 2004 three-part series finale of the Justice League animated series.

Justice League: Doom is set to be Warner Bros. Animation’s first direct-to-DVD feature of 2012. For more details about Warner Bros. Animation’s next release, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, check out Comic Book Resource’s WonderCon panel report.

  • Ollywood

Raise your hand if you thought it they were going to fight Doctor Doom! :D

Anyway, what Batman did makes perfect sense: when your allies are some of the most powerful beings on Earth, in a world where everything from power-stealing to mind-control can happen, it would be *stupid* not to have contingencies against them. His only error was not trusting his own friends -also the World’s Noblest Heroes- with this fact. In case, I don’t know, some villain STEALS his plans? Also, would he have minded if *they* had anti-Batman contingencies? Because powers or not, Bats is one of the most dangerous men on Earth as this very story proves, and if there’s a JLAer that’s ever been close to falling off the edge, it’s him.

It will be fun to see how they handle this in the movie.

Eh anything to see Batman beating everyone up. So predictable. These movies have been mediocre anyway. Taking great source material and mucking it up badly.

Good news! You don’t have to buy it!

Oh man, it’s a very slim one, but I’m really holding on to the hope that Kyle is gonna be the GL on this one!

Give it time and it well eventually happen.

As much as I would love to see them they wouldn’t have the marketing appeal of any Superman/Batman or JLA story, it would be too much of a financial risk.

  • turtlebeast

This could be awesome. But it won’t cuz they’ll take out all the story and turn it into a 50 to 70 minute action sequence. None of these animated features have done any justice to the source material.

  • Wyatt

Also good news; my money means more than your opinion!
