5 Deadpool Friends & Frenemies We Gotta See in the Sequel
Film, Comic Books
With Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger both bowing this year, Marvel Studios is obviously in full-on Avengers mode right now, setting the stage for next summer’s star-studded, ensemble-driven super-team blockbuster. These tentpoles are so all-encompassing that it’s easy to forget we’ve got some other notable Marvel releases in development as well.
One in particular that seems to come up quite a bit is Doctor Strange, a story about the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe. That’s former Sorcerer Supreme in the most recent comics, although the planned movie would presumably focus on a different part of Stephen Strange’s life since his “former” status is tied up in a lengthy story arc.
All reports seem to indicate that the movie is still in development, which Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey thinks he would be perfect to star in. “I’ve been lobbying for that,” he said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
“There’s a whole bunch of people [among the Grey’s crew] who are into comics and Marvel, too, on the set and they’re like, ‘Doctor Strange, that’s the one you should do.’ It would be fantastic. It’d be a great TV show, especially for HBO or something like that.”
The LA Times points back to an interview last year in which Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige professed his love for certain characters and his interest in bringing them to the big screen. “I have not been shy about my love for Dr. Strange, Black Panther and Luke Cage.” There’s been talk about a Strange film as well as a possible TV series. With Dempsey already expressing interest in the part, he was asked if he’s spoken at all with Marvel’s head of television, Jeph Loeb.
“He knows what’s going on. There was stuff going on,” Dempsey said. “At Comic-Con they were talking about me playing it and there was a rumor that I’d been cast. I mean, it’s something that’s kind of out there and, you know, I’ve been looking at that.”
“It would be a fun one to do. Hopefully, doing something like Transformers is about to show myself in an action situation where I’m not mister-weepy-doctor guy, you know, not McDreamy. You have to change that in people’s view. I’m still hungry for other things. I’d love to play Doctor Strange.”
