Craig Gillespie Likely To Direct Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Craig Gillespie, who helmed DreamWorks’ upcoming Fright Night remake, will soon begin negotiations to direct Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Deadline reports.

Long considered a frontrunner for the Lionsgate film, Gillespie beat out a list of contenders that included Seth Grahame-Smith, author of the 2009 parody novel that sets Jane Austen’s characters in a Regency-era England where the undead roam the countryside.

The book was a smash hit, kicking off the mash-up trend that spawned Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Android Karenina, Queen Victoria: Demon Hunter and similar works. However, the planned adaptation hasn’t been as lucky, losing both David O. Russell and Mike White.

Numerous actors have been connected to the project — Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy, among them — but none of them has stuck. Perhaps that will change if Gillespie’s deal comes together and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies can trudge forward.
