Rumor: Man Of Steel Will Feature
A New Krypton, An Old Villainess

If the inclusion of Jonathan and Martha Kent and, now, General Zod weren’t enough to suggest that Man of Steel will address Superman’s origin, Diane Lane seemed to confirm it with her comment that script “does cover the entire range of years, from infancy on.”

Does that mean fans are in for a rehash of 1978′s Superman, with a dash of 1980′s Superman II thrown in for good measure? That’s the $175 million question!

Latino Review turns to “a reliable source” — the same one who said Kevin Costner would play Pa Kent, that Zod would be the main villain and that Lois Lane would appear — for the answer, and finds that Zack Snyder, Christopher Nolan & Co. apparently will present Superman’s entire origin again, but using an approach similar to that of Batman Begins.

The source says that we’ll see the Man of Steel’s birth parents Jor-El and Lara on a Krypton that’s likely more akin to Coruscant from the Star Wars saga, rather than the stark, crystalline planet introduced by Richard Donner in Superman.

Also, the Kryptonian villainess reportedly won’t be Ursa, but Faora, the DC Comics character on which Ursa is based. Introduced in May 1977′s Action Comics #471, Faora had an unexplained hatred for men that led her to torture and kill 23 men. She was banished to the Phantom Zone, where she frequently plotted with Zod and the scientist Jax-Ur against Superman.

Man of Steel, which so far stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner and Michael Shannon, will be released in December 2012. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Christopher Nolan.

With Faora added to the mix, I’m more hopeful that the movie will use aspects of Superman #22.

Wait isn’t Faora the wife of General Zod in modern comics?

    She was in Smallville.

Yeah, I remember that and in her few comic book appearance’s she was a loyal follower of Zod during the war on Krypton.

I stopped paying attention to what happens in the comics a long time ago. If the hacks that write then and edit them can’t be bothered to keep the canon straight, there’s no point.

One week something is canon and the next week it’s replaced with something else.

I don’t like it. Krypton has to look unique. If it will be just another generic planet-sized city then I can scratch this movie off my list. UNLESS, Henry Cavil is naked in it. Which is incredibly unlikely. Right?

I don’t know what you’re talking about, everything in DC is canon and they changes they make too the character are so small that nobody cures about it.

I think Faora is either dead or was never born and the fans don’t cure about her at all.

No, not evertyhing is canon. Action Comics #850 said that Superman made his debut rescuing a space shuttle and Secret Origin says he did it rescuing Lois from a helicopter like in the movie.

In the Brainiac arc Superman said that his custome is based on the Kryptonian flag and in SO it turns out that it’s based on clothes worn by a 12 year old Kryptonian child.

Everything can’t be canon… it’s been a while since I read it, but didn’t AC 850 say that Lex had just moved to Smallville while SO said the had lived there his whole life?

Then there’s the origin in Countdown, which shows that Lex is the son of Lionel and Letitia Luthor, Metropolis moguls, while SO says that Lionel is a drunk farmer.

There is no canon at DC, not since Waid, Busiek, Johns, and Idelson pissed all over it.

Henry Cavill doesn’t have any qualms about flashing bare backside — he did so in The Tudors — but I somehow doubt he’ll do so in Buns Man of Steel.

In the comics all that makes Krypton unique is that it’s gone kablooey! Othersie, it was just another planet in DC’s cosmology. If you’d said New Genesis or Apokolips needs to look “unique” I’d agree. Always hated that crystal planet nonsense anway.

Making it a crystal planet made sense given that it circles a red sun and not a yellow sun.

Yay for no crystal planet! That was my least favourite thing about the old movies. Krypton looking more like Corusant sounds like they’re on the right track, but it should be less drab grey and more colourful bright retro sci-fi.

If anyone is interested there was a DC mini-series (may have been the first mini-series from DC) that gives the background of the Phantom Zone villians. It’s called Phantom Zone and in it all the villains escape.

Same thing happens in Last Son, the Donner/Johns story arc. It’s possible that the new movie will use that plot as its basis too.
