DreamWorks Gets Ready To Rumble With Real Steel Sequel

Although director Shawn Levy’s rock ‘em, sock ‘em robot-boxing drama Real Steel doesn’t open for another six months, DreamWorks is already gearing up for another round.

Deadline reports that the studio has hired John Gatins, who penned the screenplay for the first movie, to begin work on the second. Sure it’s early, but the website points to strong response from internal screenings and from the CinemaCon presentation last month in Las Vegas.

Set in the near-future where boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as a washed-up fighter who lost his shot at a title when 2,000-pound, 8-foot-tall robots took over the ring. Now a small-time promoter barely scraping by, he reluctantly teams with his estranged teenage son (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender.

According to Deadline, development on the sequel has only just begun, and deals still have to be made with Levy and Jackman. Real Steel also stars Kevin Durand (Lost), Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) and Evangeline Lilly (Lost). You can check out the trailer below.

This sounds like something from the Awesome-O episode of South Park where Cartman was cranking out hilariously bad movie ideas.
