Arnold Schwarzenegger Will Be Back As The Terminator

Remember in 1984 when Arnold Schwarzenegger promised, “I’ll be back”? Well, he’s back. Again.

Deadline reports the former governor of California is attached to star in a proposed revival of The Terminator winding its way through Hollywood. There’s apparently no script or even a plot yet, just a rights package that also includes Fast Five director Justin Lin. Robert Cort (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Jumanji) is producing.

According to 24 Frames, Schwarzenegger, who’s looking to reignite the movie career he gave up for politics, would definitely play the lead, rather than a supporting role “in which he passed the baton to a new hero.”

Schwarzenegger’s announcement of his desire to return to acting sparked immediate discussion of Universal’s hopes for a revival of the sci-fi franchise as a vehicle for Lin. However, Deadline notes that the rights package, being shopped by Creative Artists Agency, marks the first movement on the project since February 2010, when the property emerged from bankruptcy auction in the hands of Santa Barbara hedge fund Pacificor.

Halcyon, the now-bankrupt company that made 2009’s Terminator Salvation, had intended the McG-directed film as the start of a new trilogy — a plan supported by unsuccessful bidders Lionsgate and Sony. However, the involvement of Schwarzenegger and Lin would seem to signal that Pacificor envisions a different future for the franchise. As 24 Frames suggests, that could be a continuation of the story threads from 2003’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, or it could head off in an entirely new direction.

I think ignoring T3 and T4 would be the best way to please the fans. A full 100% reboot wouldn’t make sense with Ahnold still playing the Terminator. Personally, I’d love for a movie post T4. Showing more development towards the model we all remember from the original Terminator, while continuing Connor’s rise to leading the forces in the future.

I’m not happy about this purely because Ahnold is too old now to be imposing, he looks kind of silly in T3 and he’s only gotten older and fatter since then. I wasn’t blown away by Salvation but there’s still potential for that direction so I hope they stick with that.

I remember reading somewhere that the plan for T5 involved time travel again, so its conceivable that Arnold could play the human who the T-101 is based on with John Connor interacting with him in the past

    I’d rather see Salvation continue.

ahnold was in t4 at the very end, right??

Not officially. They CGI’d an Arnold lookalike in, but that’s about it.

  • RawShark

Well, Ahnold’s FACE was. They CGI’d it on to a younger, fitter looking body. Case in point, he’s too old now to be the Terminator. I would NOT want some old dude appearing in a time bubble, naked, outside the back of my house, no sir!
